MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Pitt in its final exhibition match of the preseason Sunday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

“We didn’t play a full 90 minutes tonight and it showed in the score,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Pitt caused us some different problems than what Akron did (Friday night).

“You wish you could get some moments back, and nobody is ever satisfied with a tie, but that is what the preseason is all about. We need to learn from tonight and get ready for our season opener.”

The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on a goal from sophomore forward Kate Schwindel. Freshman midfielder Amanda Hill won a goal kick just inside the center circle, playing a through ball toward the right side of the box. Schwindel chased down Hill’s pass and slotted a ball inside the far post from 16 yards out for the early lead.

Pitt came out strong in the second half and found the back of the net in the 60th minute off the foot of forward Ashley Cuba. Alex Charlebois flicked on a ball to a hustling Cuba as WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane came off her line. Cuba’s final touch went past a sliding Keane and into the net to make it a 1-1 match.

WVU held a 12-7 edge in shots after 90 minutes of play and the Panthers were called for 20 fouls to only nine for West Virginia. By coaches' agreement, the teams did not play overtime.

Keane made two saves on the night, and kept Pitt off the board early with a penalty kick stop in the 14th minute. A hand ball in the box gave Katie Lippert a penalty kick try that resulted in an easy save from Keane.

West Virginia’s best scoring chance of the second half came late in the match as defender Bry McCarthy made a run forward. McCarthy lined a shot at the left post that was stopped by a diving Nicole D’Agostino to her right.

Freshman forward Kelsie Maloney paced all Mountaineers with three shots on the night, including a strong look just two minutes into the contest that drifted wide of the goal.

West Virginia opens the 2012 regular season, the 17th in program history, against La Salle on Friday, Aug. 17. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk is slated for 7 p.m.
