MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer player Bry McCarthy
has been named to the 2012 Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy Watch List, released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The award is college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy and represents the highest level of individual achievement in the sport. Players are selected to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List by a committee of Division I coaches who are NSCAA members.
“It’s well deserved for Bry to have her name listed alongside some of the best players in the country,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “She has worked hard to put herself in a position to succeed, and we know what a high level of soccer she will bring to our team this fall.”
McCarthy, a senior, is one of 38 players named to the preseason listing. The Ajax, Ontario, native was an NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team selection last year. The outside back helped the defense record 11 shutouts and led the team in assists with nine. A two-time All-Big East choice, McCarthy has participated in several training camps with the Canadian National Team and owns three caps.
McCarthy is the eighth Mountaineer in program history to be named to the watch list, including two later named semifinalists: Ashley Banks (2007) and Chrissie Abbott (2003).
A list of 15 semifinalists is selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced on Dec. 6. They will be invited to the M.A.C. in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 11, 2013, where the winner will be announced, with a presentation banquet following.
