Meet Shelby Lyon
With the 2012 season underway, WVUsports.com continues to get to know the 12 newcomers on the West Virginia women’s soccer team. Today’s edition features Tabernacle, N.J., native Shelby Lyon.
What attracted you to play soccer at West Virginia University?
I liked West Virginia because of the team chemistry among the team and coaching staff. I felt really comfortable here.
The program has had a lot of recent success with players from New Jersey, how did that play into your recruitment?
I saw (Sara) Keane and (Kate) Schwindel play last year but I was already committed to WVU. I am aware of some previous players from New Jersey, but it really didn’t affect my decision.
Who has been the biggest impact on your soccer career and why?
My parents, for sure. They have always done everything possible to get me to and from practices and games. I have a lot of family members and they did a lot to make sure I enjoyed and had a successful soccer career.
The jump from high school to collegiate soccer is a big one, what has been the biggest challenge in your transition?
Fitness has been a little rough for me thus far. I’m not the best of runner, so I think I was behind a bit when I arrived. But I’m getting more and more fit each day.
Of the teams not on our schedule, who would you like to play most and why?
I would say Rutgers because it’s close to home for me. And my best friend’s sister will be playing there next year. It would be fun to compete against her.
How were your first few days of classes?
It was good. And I didn’t get lost. Luckily, I have almost all my classes with Kelsie (Maloney) and we followed each other across campus.
