Mazey Adds 19 Newcomers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Randy Mazey has announced the Mountaineers’ recruiting class for the 2013 season with the addition of 19 student-athletes.

“We are very excited about our first recruiting class for Mountaineer baseball,” Mazey says. “Our coaching staff was not in place until mid-July, but coach (Derek) Matlock and coach (Steven) Trout did an unbelievable job of finding some good quality players in a short period of time. This year's recruiting class will be the nucleus of West Virginia baseball for the years to come.”

The class is made up of nine pitchers, two catchers, four infielders and four outfielders, as well as two players who were previously chosen in the Major League Baseball draft.

Sean Carley (Melbourne, Fla.), Brock Dykxhoorn (Goderich, Ontario, Canada), Corey Holmes (Waco, Texas), Ryan Hostrander (Williamsport, Pa.), John Means (Olathe, Kan.), Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa.), Pascal Paul (Merrill, Wis.), Cale Russell (Norman, Okla.) and Michael Teagle (Houston, Texas) comprise a group of nine new pitchers on next season’s staff.

The position players include Nick Chafin (Lexington, Ky.), Michael Constantini (Yardville, N.J.), Ray Guerrini (Highland Heights, Ohio), Taylor Munden (Lewisville, Texas), Dan Pappas (Chicago, Ill.), Jacob Rice (Tulsa, Okla.), Billy Sager (Kenova, W.Va.), Alex Stephens (Wheeling, W.Va.), Ryan Tuntland (Des Plaines, Ill.) and Shaun Wood (Arlington, Va.). Munden will see time on the mound as well.

Sean Carley, RHP, 6-4, 230, Melbourne, Fla., Air Force Academy, Melbourne Central Catholic
Transfer from Air Force Academy after playing for the Falcons from 2010-11 … had one of the best pitching seasons in Air Force history, posting a 3.94 ERA and earning All-Mountain West Second Team honors in 2011 … started all 12 games pitched, leading the team with three wins and 62 strikeouts in 82.1 innings … led team with three complete games and one shutout … the 3.94 ERA was the lowest at Air Force since 1983 and lowest in Mountain West era … tossed a two-hit shutout against Bowling Green, striking out a career-high 12 batters ... after allowing two base-hit singles in the first, retired 24 in a row to close out game vs. Bowling Green … pitched eight-plus innings five times ... stuck out five-plus batters six times ... held opponents to three-or-fewer earned runs seven times … lettered four years in baseball and three in football at Melbourne Central Catholic ... 7-1 record with 1.14 ERA, striking out 67 in 55 innings as a senior ... Space Coast Conference Pitching MVP, All-Space Coast Conference First Team, MVP of county all-star game and led team to Class 3A Regional Semifinals as a senior ... Wendy's High School Heisman Award Winner, Class 3A All-State Pitcher … played summer ball for the Florida Stars … ranked the No. 912 player nationally in the Class of 2009 by Perfect Game … named a 2009 Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason Florida Region Honorable Mention All-American.

Nick Chafin, OF, 6-0, 180, Lexington, Ky., Lexington Catholic
Played three seasons for coach Taylor Brooks at Lexington Catholic … finished 2012 with a .301 batting average, 22 runs, six doubles, one triple, one home run, 14 RBIs and eight stolen bases … led the team a 32-8 record and the 43rd District Championship in 2010 … played in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA National Championship and the 2011 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship.

Michael Constantini, INF, 6-1, 170, Yardville, N.J., Mercer County CC, Steinert HS
Two-year starting shortstop at Mercer Community College, leading the team in batting average (.380), hits (60), runs (42), RBIs (26) and on-base percentage (.460) as a sophomore … named to the All-Region 19 First Team and All-Garden State Athletic Conference First Team, while also earning the ranking of the No. 3 best player in Region 19 in 2012 … completed freshman season batting .291 with 32 runs, five doubles, one triple, one homer and 17 RBIs … helped Mercer C.C. to back-to-back appearances in the Region 19 Championship game … played for the Philly Bandits in the summer of 2012 … represented Mercer County in the prestigious Carpenter Cup after attending Steinert High … named the Mercer County American Legion League’s Most Valuable Player and Gold Glove award winner while playing for Hamilton Post 31 in 2010 … holds Hamilton Post 31 career records for fielding percentage (.989), consecutive errorless games (31) and consecutive attempts with an error (100) … also played basketball during high school.

Brock Dykxhoorn, RHP, 6-8, 225, Goderich, Ontario, Canada, St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary
Selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 20th round of the 2012 MLB Draft … member of Team Canada Junior National Team … participated in the 2012 World Junior Championships in Seoul, South Korea … traveled to the Dominican Republic and Orlando, Fla., playing for Team Canada … MVP of St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary as a senior … played for the Ontario Nationals of the Premiere Baseball League of Ontario … completed 2012 with a 6-2 record and two one-hitters for the Nationals.

Ray Guerrini, C, 6-0, 185, Highland Heights, Ohio, Mayfield HS
Attended Mayfield High, where he batted .462 with 30 runs, 12 extra-base hits and 40 RBIs as a senior … first team all-state in 2012, while also being named a Cleveland Plain Dealer All-Star and a News Herald All-Star … two-time First Team All-Northeast Ohio Conference honoree … played in the Ohio East-West All-Star game … two-time all-conference honoree and team MVP on the football team.

Corey Holmes, RHP, 6-6, 190, Waco, Texas, McLennan CC, Midway HS
Spent two seasons at McLellan CC under the direction of Pete Mejia … pitched a combined 13.1 innings with 12 strikeouts in 13 appearances from 2011-12 … played for the Victoria Generals of the Texas Collegiate League in summer 2012, finishing with one save in eight appearances … struck out 15 in 13.1 innings pitched … academic all-district in football and baseball at Midway High … missed senior season due to injury … ranked No. 261 nationally, No. 91 pitcher and No. 29 player in the state of Texas by Perfect Game in 2010 … named a 2010 Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason Texas Region Second Team All-American … earned 2009 Perfect Game Preseason Underclass Second Team All-America honors … second team all-state and Super Centex selection in football.

Ryan Hostrander, RHP, 6-2, 190, Williamsport, Pa., Williamsport Area HS
Four-year starter at Williamsport Area High, earning All-Around Male Athlete of the Year honors in 2012 … member of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Big League State Championship teams … went 3-3 with a 1.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 61 strikeouts in 53 innings in 2012 … led the team in batting average (.411) as well … earned Williamsport Sun Gazette Baseball Player of the Year and ESPN Baseball Player of the Year (Lycoming County) honors as a senior … spent the 2012 summer playing for the Evoshield Canes ... star defensive end and tight end on the football team.

John Means, LHP, 6-3, 225, Olathe, Kan., Fort Scott CC, Gardner-Edgerton HS
Played the 2012 season for coach John Hill at Fort Scott Community College … earned NJCAA Division I All-Region VI Second Team and All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference First Team honors … went unbeaten in eight appearances with a 6-0 record and a 1.14 ERA … averaged 1.14 strikeouts per inning with 36 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched, walking only eight … threw a complete game two-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters at Cowley … played for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in summer 2012 … made eight appearances with a 3-2 record and 1.26 ERA … struck out 49 batters in 43 innings, holding opponents to a .186 batting average … member of the 2012 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball All-Star Game … selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 46th round of the 2011 MLB Draft … attended Gardner-Edgerton High … earned Class 5A Second Team All-State, Kansas City Star Second Team All-Metro and All-East Kansas League First Team honors in 2011 … member of the 2011 Kansas City Royals Elite Scout Team … played in the 2011 Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches All-Star Game.

Played two seasons for Doug Little at Potomac JC, finishing third in the 2011 JUCO World Series … struck out 19 with a 2.80 ERA in 22 innings at Potomac State, while batting .312 with 30 RBIs … member of the Region XX All-Tournament team … attended Hedgesville High as a junior and senior … finished 2010 season with a 2.17 ERA in 9.2 innings pitched, striking out 10 … batted .341 at the plate with 27 runs, five doubles, four triples, five home runs and 30 RBIs … second team all-state, first team all-region and a Mid-Atlantic All-Star in 2010 … also first team all-state in wrestling.

Taylor Munden, INF/OF/RHP, 5-10, 185, Lewisville, Texas, Marion Military Institute, Lewisville HS
Played for coach Jake Rowell at Marion Military Institute as a freshman in 2012 … batted .327 with 18 runs, 10 doubles, 12 RBIs and 10 stolen bases … pitched in eight games with a 2-2 record, 5.40 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 34.1 innings … three-year starter for coach Mike Campbell at Lewisville High ... finished senior season with a .459 batting average, nine doubles, one triple, four homers and 16 RBIs.

Dan Pappas, C, 6-2, 200, Chicago, Ill., Mount Carmel HS
Three-year starter for coach Brian Hurry at Mount Carmel High … named a captain in 2012, finishing the season with a .395 batting average, 30 runs, 15 doubles, one triple and four home runs … named First Team All-Chicago League Conference as a senior … participated in the 2011 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship … three-year letterwinner on the football team.

Pascal Paul, RHP, 6-3, 200, Merrill, Wis., Iowa Western CC, Merrill HS
Played two seasons for coach Marc Rardin at Iowa Western CC, helping team to a JUCO World Series Championship in 2012 and a third-place finish in 2011 … team finished 2012 season with a 62-6 record and a No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA … led team with seven saves to go with a 2-0 record, 2.53 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched … recorded one save and eight strikeouts in 11 appearances during 2011 season … spent summer of 2012 playing for the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the Northwoods League … went 2-4 with a 5.97 ERA in 16 games .. struck out 34 batters in 37.2 innings with three saves … 2010 Second Team All-Great Northern Conference pitcher and infielder at Merrill High … earned First Team All-Great Northern Conference as an outfielder in 2009 … also a star football and basketball player, earning all-state, all-region and all-conference honors as a quarterback in 2010.

Played one season at Eastern Oklahoma State College for coach Craig Price … helped team to a 36-20 record and a Region II Championship … batted .364 with 37 runs, seven doubles, two triples, eight homers, 49 RBIs and nine stolen bases … named to the 2012 All-Region 2 First Team … spent the 2011 season at Arkansas, playing in 21 games with 12 starts … earned the starting nod in final two games of NCAA Tempe Regional, finishing each game with a hit and scoring two runs … three-year starter at Union High ... named all-conference and all-metro after senior season, in which he hit .338 with seven homers and 47 RBIs ... led team to the 6A State Championship as a senior ... selected to play in the Oklahoma East vs. West All-Star Game … hit .481 in his junior season with seven home runs and 29 RBIs ... earned all-conference and all-metro honors following the season and also was voted team MVP ... also was a three-year letterwinner for the football team, where he helped the team to two state championships … ranked the No. 157 player nationally, No. 2 player in Oklahoma and No. 26 infielder in the Class of 2010 by Perfect Game … named a 2010 Rawlings/Perfect Game Third Team All-American and West Region First Team All-American.

Cale Russell, LHP, 5-11, 175, Norman, Okla., Seminole State College, Norman North HS
Spent the 2012 season with coach Jeff Shafer at Seminole State College … helped team to a 41-15 record and an appearance in the Region II Tournament semifinal … finished 2012 campaign with a 1-1 record, 3.80 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 21 innings … played 2011 season with Wallace State CC … compiled a 3-5 record with a 3.50 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 59 innings … played three seasons for Norman North High … went 10-3 with a 1.42 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 77 innings as a senior, earning team MVP honors … named to the 2010 Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large School team … holds school career record for strikeouts (163) and school season record for doubles (15), innings pitched (77), strikeouts (127), games started (12), complete games (9), wins (10) and ERA (1.82) … also played for the Oklahoma Baseball Academy … named a 2010 Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason West Region Honorable Mention All-American … participated in the 2009 Perfect Game South Top Prospect Showcase, as well as the Perfect Game South Underclass Showcase from 2007-08.

Four-year starter for coach Larry Cartwright at The Linsly School … batted .533 with 40 runs, six homers, 34 RBIs and a school record 33 stolen bases … finished career with a .450 batting average, 62 stolen bases, 77 extra-base hits, a .760 slugging percentage and a .950 fielding percentage … 2011 Under Armour Preseason All-American … four-time All-Valley Region First Team and three-time All-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference First Team … won the Gold Glove and Offensive Award for American Legion Post 1 … also a star quarterback, holding single season school records for passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage … played in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA National Championship.

Spent 2012 playing for coach Buddy Thames at Kingwood Park High … went 7-0 with a 2.06 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 55 innings, averaging 1.2 strikeouts per inning … District 14-4A Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-District 14-4A in 2012 … played in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA National Championship and the 2011 Perfect Game WWBA South Qualifier.

Ryan Tuntland, INF, 6-1, 190, Des Plaines, Ill., Oakton CC, Maine West HS
