Mazey Adds 19 Newcomers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Randy Mazey has announced the Mountaineers’ recruiting class for the 2013 season with the addition of 19 student-athletes.
“We are very excited about our first recruiting class for Mountaineer baseball,” Mazey says. “Our coaching staff was not in place until mid-July, but coach (Derek) Matlock and coach (Steven) Trout did an unbelievable job of finding some good quality players in a short period of time. This year's recruiting class will be the nucleus of West Virginia baseball for the years to come.”
The class is made up of nine pitchers, two catchers, four infielders and four outfielders, as well as two players who were previously chosen in the Major League Baseball draft.
Sean Carley (Melbourne, Fla.), Brock Dykxhoorn (Goderich, Ontario, Canada), Corey Holmes (Waco, Texas), Ryan Hostrander (Williamsport, Pa.), John Means (Olathe, Kan.), Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa.), Pascal Paul (Merrill, Wis.), Cale Russell (Norman, Okla.) and Michael Teagle (Houston, Texas) comprise a group of nine new pitchers on next season’s staff.
The position players include Nick Chafin (Lexington, Ky.), Michael Constantini (Yardville, N.J.), Ray Guerrini (Highland Heights, Ohio), Taylor Munden (Lewisville, Texas), Dan Pappas (Chicago, Ill.), Jacob Rice (Tulsa, Okla.), Billy Sager (Kenova, W.Va.), Alex Stephens (Wheeling, W.Va.), Ryan Tuntland (Des Plaines, Ill.) and Shaun Wood (Arlington, Va.). Munden will see time on the mound as well.
Sean Carley, RHP, 6-4, 230, Melbourne, Fla., Air Force Academy, Melbourne Central Catholic
Transfer from Air Force Academy after playing for the Falcons from 2010-11 … had one of the best pitching seasons in Air Force history, posting a 3.94 ERA and earning All-Mountain West Second Team honors in 2011 … started all 12 games pitched, leading the team with three wins and 62 strikeouts in 82.1 innings … led team with three complete games and one shutout … the 3.94 ERA was the lowest at Air Force since 1983 and lowest in Mountain West era … tossed a two-hit shutout against Bowling Green, striking out a career-high 12 batters ... after allowing two base-hit singles in the first, retired 24 in a row to close out game vs. Bowling Green … pitched eight-plus innings five times ... stuck out five-plus batters six times ... held opponents to three-or-fewer earned runs seven times … lettered four years in baseball and three in football at Melbourne Central Catholic ... 7-1 record with 1.14 ERA, striking out 67 in 55 innings as a senior ... Played three seasons for coach Taylor Brooks at Lexington Catholic … finished 2012 with a .301 batting average, 22 runs, six doubles, one triple, one home run, 14 RBIs and eight stolen bases … led the team a 32-8 record and the 43rd District Championship in 2010 … played in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA National Championship and the 2011 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship.
Michael Constantini, INF, 6-1, 170, Yardville, N.J., Mercer County CC, Steinert HS
Two-year starting shortstop at Mercer Community College, leading the team in batting average (.380), hits (60), runs (42), RBIs (26) and on-base percentage (.460) as a sophomore … named to the All-Region 19 First Team and All-Garden State Athletic Conference First Team, while also earning the ranking of the No. 3 best player in Region 19 in 2012 … completed freshman season batting .291 with 32 runs, five doubles, one triple, one homer and 17 RBIs … helped Mercer C.C. to back-to-back appearances in the Region 19 Championship game … played for the Philly Bandits in the summer of 2012 … represented Mercer County in the prestigious Carpenter Cup after attending Steinert High … named the Mercer County American Legion League’s Most Valuable Player and Gold Glove award winner while playing for Hamilton Post 31 in 2010 … holds Hamilton Post 31 career records for fielding percentage (.989), consecutive errorless games (31) and consecutive attempts with an error (100) … also played basketball during high school.

Attended Mayfield High, where he batted .462 with 30 runs, 12 extra-base hits and 40 RBIs as a senior … first team all-state in 2012, while also being named a Cleveland Plain Dealer All-Star and a News Herald All-Star … two-time First Team All-Northeast Ohio Conference honoree … played in the Ohio East-West All-Star game … two-time all-conference honoree and team MVP on the football team.
