Silva Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior Frances Silva was named the VSR Athlete of the Week following her game-winning goal against Stanford, the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, on Sunday at the Penn State Invitational.

Silva scored her first goal of the season, 13th of her career, in the 83rd minute. She attempted a team-high three shots in the victory, and also took three attempts against Central Michigan on Aug. 24.

This Week in Women’s Soccer
The Mountaineers return to action this weekend as host of the WVU 90 Minute Classic … West Virginia, Penn State, Miami (Fla.) and Pitt make up the four-team field … Pitt and Miami will square off on Friday, Aug. 31, at 5 p.m., followed by WVU versus third-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. … on Sunday, Sept. 2, WVU battles Miami at noon, followed by Penn State and Pitt at 2:30 p.m.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer
The Mountaineers went 1-1-0 last week at the Penn State Invitational, dropping a 2-0 decision to Central Michigan on Aug. 24 and defeating No. 1-ranked Stanford, 1-0, on Aug. 26 … two first-half goals pushed Central Michigan past West Virginia … WVU played well for much of the opening half, but lapses in the first and final five minutes doomed the Mountaineers … the Chippewas scored goals in the second and 44th minutes … the Mountaineers created several good scoring tries in the second half but came up empty in the final third of the field … Frances Silva’s goal in the 83rd minute propelled West Virginia past Stanford … the Mountaineers executed their game plan to perfection, keeping the dangerous Cardinal offense in front of them throughout the match … the WVU defense allowed only one shot on-goal for the match – none in the final 47 minutes, and only one corner kick … West Virginia also was able to create scoring chances in transition, leading to five shots on-goal and two corner kick tries.

The Stanford win marked WVU’s eighth-straight season defeating a Top 10 opponent … the Mountaineers’ win over Stanford was their first over a nation’s top-ranked team … the victory snapped Stanford’s 64-match regular-season unbeaten streak … Stanford was held without a goal, snapping a 25-game streak of scoring at least one goal … the last time the Mountaineers faced a No. 1-ranked team was in 2006 … sophomore Ali Connelly earned her first collegiate start against CMU … sophomore Jess Crowder started her first career match at defender, after starting the previous two games at midfield.

The No. 9 WVU men’s soccer team will hit the road for a pair of road games against No. 1 North Carolina and No. 19 Wake Forest … the Mountaineers and UNC square off on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m., while WVU and Wake Forest will battle on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.

The Mountaineers defeated Hartford, 2-1, last Saturday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Midfielder Travis Pittman scored the first goal of the 2012 season in the 20th minute of Saturday’s match to give WVU the 1-0 lead … defender Peabo Doue notched the game-winning goal in the 77th minute for the victory … forward Ryan Cain and midfielder Craig Stephens each recorded their first career point with assists … the crowd of 1,786 is the fifth-best all-time to witness a men’s soccer game at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … seven different Mountaineers played their first career match.

This Week in Volleyball
The West Virginia University volleyball team plays host to its first Big 12 opponent on Wednesday, Aug. 29 … the Mountaineers will welcome the Texas Longhorns to the WVU Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. … this will be the first Big 12 match played in Morgantown since the Mountaineers joined the league on July 1 … WVU will then travel to the George Mason Patriot Inn Invitational on Sept. 1-2 … the Mountaineers will take on South Carolina and Navy on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively … the team will finish off the tournament with a match against tournament host George Mason at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Last Week in Volleyball
WVU opened its 2012 season with a 2-1 record and tournament victory at the Mountaineer Invitational … the team defeated Central Connecticut State (3-0) and Loyola-Maryland (3-0), but dropped a match to St. Francis (3-2).

Notes and Quotes
Freshman Hannah Sackett was named MVP of the Mountaineer Invitational after leading WVU in kills (54), kills per set (4.91), service aces (6) and points (62.5) … the Somers, Mont., native currently leads the Big 12 in kills, kills per set and is ranked in the top 10 in service aces and hitting percentage (.371) … Sackett posted 23 kills on 42 attempts and only one error for a .524 hitting percentage against Central Connecticut State which ranks third in Big 12 three set match hitting percentage and first in kills … Sackett also recorded 23 and 15 kills in back-to-back matches … her 38 kills are the most in back-to-back games since 2008 … Freshman middle blocker Caleah Wells and freshman setter Brittany Sample were also named to the all-tournament team at the Mountaineer Invitational … Wells led the team with 18 total blocks and a .383 hitting percentage … the Red Oak, Texas native also had back-to-back matches where she recorded zero errors for a .667 and .533 hitting percentages … Sample guided the Mountaineer offense with 107 assists and is currently second on the team with 32 digs.
