MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University football player quotes during Tuesday's media session at Milan Puskar Stadium:

Darwin Cook
- On how the offense has looked in practice
We are going head to head against them every day in practice and making each other better. They may be ahead of us a little bit right now. We are just going to keep getting better and better each day. We are not in midseason form yet obviously. We haven’t even scratched the surface of what we can be.

- On Marshall’s quarterback Rakeem Cato
He is bound to be better than last year, because it was his first start when we played against them last year. I expect to see a better quarterback this season. He is going to be smarter. He looks as though he is going to be really good this year.

Tavon Austin
- On Heisman talk
My friends and family will call me and ask me about it. They will let me know what they heard on SportsCenter or things like that. I don’t really pay attention to it though. I am just thankful that my name is being mentioned with that type of award. I am going to keep marching forward with the right attitude, and hopefully, my name is called at the end of the year.

- On the different stage size due to the change of conference
Yes, there is definitely going to be a change in hype for us, because of the change in conference. We are going to be seeing teams that we haven’t seen in the past, and everyone is excited to come in and have a good year.

Geno Smith
- On the WVU-Marshall rivalry
We are all excited – it is the first game. We know that all of their guys are going to come in here with a lot of enthusiasm. They are going to be ready to play. We want to match their intensity. We are not going to take anything lightly, and we are going to take it one step at a time. We are going to come out ready to play.

- On the improvements he has made in his game
I have added weight - that is pretty apparent when you look at me. Other than that, I have just been myself and continued to grow. A lot of maturity comes with playing this game. I am an older player now. Guys are going to look to me for leadership. Leadership is something that I take a lot of pride in. I want to keep getting better and that is something I want to work on every day.

Jordan Thompson
- On the hype that surrounds him during his freshman season
We have a lot of playmakers around here. Tavon (Austin) has been mentioned in the Heisman run. Also, going to the Big 12 has a lot of hype. We are not going to let that get in our heads, but we definitely have a goal of winning the Big 12. We also want to contend for a national title. I am in a perfect situation.

- On his role in this offense
I think I am perfect for this type of offense. I bring speed, and I am smart as far as reading coverages. I picked up the playbook pretty quickly. I feel like I can contribute to this team, and I feel like we are going to go far this season.

Shawne Alston
- On being a starter this season
I am very excited, because this is the first time I am starting a game at the beginning of the season. I just want to go out there and do a great job. I want to bring energy, but at the same time, I have to go out there and make some plays.

I felt like I had to prove myself last season and this season. I wanted to go out every day and compete for the starting job. Last year, I almost cried, because I wasn’t playing. It hurts really bad to be standing on the sidelines.

- On last year’s game against Marshall
It was definitely a weird game, but our coaches did a good job of keeping us in tune with what was going on while we were in the locker room. Our players were getting hungry, or they were lying down. The training staff was making sure that we stayed loose. Me personally, I don’t like bad weather games like that.

Shaq Rowell
- On his comfort level compared to last year
I wouldn’t use the word comfortable, because I am still hungry. I have things that I need to prove. I feel like everything has slowed down as far as the pace compared to last year. I feel happy to be here, and I am excited with the new things coming up. We are looking forward to getting out on the field against Marshall. This is the best team we are playing, because this is the first game on the schedule.

- On his expectations for Saturday’s game
To be honest, I am a little nervous to start, but I am excited too. Last year, I sat on the sidelines and watched Jorge (Wright) play – that wasn’t fun. Then again, that showed me that I had a lot to work on if I wanted to play. My spot is never guaranteed. Every week I have something to prove. Christian (Brown) is right behind me, and he is hungry like a dog that hasn’t eaten in a week.

Terrence Garvin
- On being a leader with Darwin Cook
It is a good feeling when you know your head coach has your back. We have been working hard, and we have been working hard to encourage the young guys. We want to bring this team together.

- On his position change
It is a little bit different, but the names of certain things have changed. For the most part, it is a lot of the same things I have to do. I try to be versatile. I will try to play wherever I am needed to play. The main difference is the name for certain things. At the end of the day it is football, so there are only so many things that you can and can’t do.

I lifted and gained some weight over the summer, but nothing like 20 or 30 pounds.
