FAIRFAX, Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped its final match at The Mason Inn Patriot Invitational to George Mason 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 19-25), Sunday, at the George Mason Recreation and Athletic Facility.

The Mountaineers (3-4, 0-1) battled with the Patriots (2-4, 0-0 CAA) before ultimately falling in the last match of its first road trip and finishing the invitational 1-2.

A slow start to set one put West Virginia in a tough position as Kramer was forced to call a timeout with the Patriots leading 5-1. The Mountaineers would come back to tie the set at 7-7 and would keep the match close until four kills between Lana Zonjic and Meredith Bush gave George Mason the first set 25-22.

The second set found the Patriots leading 4-0 before a comeback led by freshman outside hitter Nikki Attea gave the Mountaineers a 5-4 advantage. The two teams battled until a kill from Bush gave George Mason a 3-0 scoring run that they never lost as the Patriots took the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

WVU attempted a comeback in the third set by starting with a 10-5 lead, but George Mason would not give up and a scoring run by Danielle Cook near the end gave the Patriots the momentum to take the match in three sets.

Attea led all hitters with 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage while sophomore middle blocker Evyn McCoy chipped in eight kills and two blocks. Defensively, WVU was led by freshman libero Anna Panagiotakopoulos who registered 20 digs.

The Mountaineers will return to competition on Sept. 7-8 for the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe Challenge at the WVU Coliseum. The team will play host to Maryland-Eastern Shore, Saint Peter’s, Radford and Wright State.
