MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team will begin its fall season this weekend, as it travels to Wilmington, N.C., for the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational held at the Country Club of Landfall on Sept. 7-9.
The tournament, which will feature four singles flights and two doubles flights, will be host to players from UNC-Wilmington, Charleston Southern and VCU along with the Mountaineers.
This will be the second-consecutive season that WVU has opened its fall season at the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational.
“This is the most excited I have been since I’ve gotten here,” said coach Tina Samara. “We have six players that can compete at every spot.”
The Mountaineers return two lettermen, senior Emily Mathis
and sophomore Ikttesh Chahal
, from last year’s roster.
Mathis, who was slowed by a stomach strain during the majority of the spring season, finished the year with 14 combined victories.
Chahal returns after a strong finish to her freshman season in which she completed the year with 16 overall wins, nine singles wins and victories in seven of her last nine matches.
In addition to Chahal and Mathis, the Mountaineers will have freshmen Vivian Tsui
, Irinka Toidze
and Hailey Barrett
“Hailey comes in with a lot of experience,” Samara said. “She was ranked as the 66th-best recruit in the country, so she has played some of the top kids coming into college. For the two international kids, this is all new to them. There is obviously some shock that is going to be involved because of the new level, but we want them to realize that they are going to have to work extremely hard to be competitive.”
Along with the three freshmen, Louisiana-Lafayette transfer Audrey Wooland
will see her first action with WVU.
“Audrey has competed at this level before, so nothing should really come as a big shock to her,” Samara said. “With that being said, we are looking forward to her getting out on the court and playing at the level we know she can play.”
Competition will begin at 8 a.m. each day and run throughout the course of the afternoon.
A recap of each day’s action will be available on WVUsports.com following the completion of competition.
