Cross Country Finishes Fourth at Penn State
The Mountaineers finished with 104 points for fourth out of 10 teams while invitational host Penn State won the event with 25 points after having five runners finish in the top 10. No. 15-ranked Princeton finished in second with 52 points while Navy finished third with 97 points. Ohio (108), Delaware (197), Rutgers (206), Geneseo State (207), St. Joseph’s (245) and St. Francis (319) rounded out the rest of the field. “I am pleased with today’s race,” coach Sean Cleary says. “It is so early in the year to gauge exactly where we are, but two things that we do know are that we are fit and moving in the right direction.” Racing in her first event for WVU, sophomore transfer Savanna Plombon finished first for the Mountaineers in 14th place out of 126 runners with a 6k time of 22:07. Redshirt junior Jordan Hamric followed in 17th with a time of 22:18 while redshirt senior Aubrey Moskal and redshirt junior Sarah Martinelli both finished with a time of 22:28 for 23rd and 24th place, respectively. Sophomore Kelly Williams was the fifth Mountaineer to cross the line in 26th place with a time of 22:29, while redshirt freshman Sarah McCauley and redshirt senior Hallie Portner followed in 34th and 35th place, respectively, to score the remaining points for WVU. Redshirt sophomore Allison Pettit (23:25) and redshirt junior Chelsea Jarvis (26:10) also ran in the 6k race at the Blue and White Golf Course for the Mountaineers. WVU will return to the course for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet on Nov. 9. “Savanna did a very nice job of working her way through the field,” Cleary says. ”She led the group through the difficult stages of the race and I have a feeling that we will run much faster come regional time.” The Mountaineers next compete at the Toledo Bubble Buster in Toledo, Ohio on Sept. 21 at 5:50 p.m. Women’s 6k race Penn State- 25 Princeton-52 Navy-97 WVU-104 Ohio-108 Delaware-197 Rutgers-206 Geneseo State-207 St. Joseph’s-245 St. Francis-319 West Virginia Savanna Plombon…14th ... 22:07 Jordan Hamric…17th… 22:18 Aubrey Moskal …23rd.. 22:28 Sarah Martinelli… 24th… 22:28 Kelly Williams …26th…22:29 Sarah McCauley… 34th… 22:55 Hallie Portner…35th… 23:00 Allison Pettit…62nd… 23:25 Chelsea Jarvis …124th…26:10 |
