MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will hold its first official practice of the 2013 season tomorrow at Cary Gym.

“I am really excited to officially start practice for the 2013 season,” says second-year coach Jason Butts. “The team has been working very hard during open gym and strength and conditioning sessions, and now we are ready to build off that hard work and put our routines together for competition.

“The energy and excitement for this season is already high, and we all want to do whatever it takes this fall to make sure we make another giant leap in the rankings in 2013. This team is fun. Above all else, this is a very motivated group that won’t settle for anything less than the best.”

The Mountaineers return 11 letterwinners, including seniors Chelsea Goldschrafe, Kaylyn Millick and Alaska Richardson, from a 2012 team that finished the season ranked No. 21 in the GymInfo Poll. WVU welcomes three freshmen – Gina Costa, Melissa Idell and Jaida Lawrence.

WVU finished the year at 21-5 overall and 5-4 against ranked opponents; the 20-win season was the team’s first since 2008. Additionally, the squad finished fifth at the NCAA Auburn Regional Championships with a score of 195.9, its second-highest point total of the season and the best regional mark in program history.

The Mountaineers completed their last season in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) at 12-1 and won their league-best seventh EAGL title with a season-best score of 196.475, the 10th-best score in program history.

Director of Athletics Oliver Luck is expected to announce the team’s 2013 schedule later this week.
