Women's Soccer Takes Two Big 12 Honors
McCarthy helped West Virginia to the school's first league wins, assisting on Mallory Smith's goal to give WVU a 2-0 lead over Texas Tech. She got forward into the attack and took three shots on the weekend, including a shot off the crossbar against No. 7 Oklahoma State. The senior helped record WVU's fifth shutout of the season against OSU, allowing only three shots on-goal against the defending Big 12 champion Cowgirls. OSU's offense was held to season lows in shots and shots on-goal, and WVU did not allow a single corner kick. Silva scored three goals in the Big 12 wins, including both game-winners, and currently leads the league in goals scored with eight. Against the Red Raiders, Silva gave the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute and later connected on the game-winner on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Silva scored her second straight game-winning goal in WVU's upset win Oklahoma State. The junior has scored seven goals in the last four matches, and became the first Mountaineer to score multiple goals in three consecutive games. West Virginia is 5-0-0 this season when Silva scores a goal. The Mountaineers are receiving votes in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28, for its first Big 12 road contest at TCU. |
