Cross Country Places First in Blue Race
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After placing all five scoring runners in the top 12, the West Virginia University cross country team took first place in the Blue Race at the 5k Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday in Louisville, Ky.
The Mountaineers finished with 41 points for first out of 43 teams while Penn State came in second with 134 points. Grand Valley State (190), Ferris State (221) and Eastern Illinois (226) rounded out the top five.
“This is exactly what this group needed,” coach Sean Cleary says. “The most important objective today was coming to this meet and familiarizing ourselves with the course. Having the team experience the individual and team success is a powerful plus. This was one of our better overall team performances of the year and almost the entire group ran lifetime bests.
“We will come home and work very hard for the next two weeks before tackling the course again.”
Racing in their first event since the Penn State Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8, redshirt juniors Jordan Hamric and Sarah Martinelli and sophomore Savanna Plombon finished in third, sixth and ninth place, respectively, for the Mountaineers. Hamric led WVU with a 5k time of 17:57.60, while Martinelli crossed the line in 18:00.34 and Plombon in 18:05.27.
Sophomore Kelly Williams scored next for WVU after finishing in 11th place with a time of 18:14.79, while redshirt senior Aubrey Moskal followed nine-tenths of a second behind in 12th place to round out the scorers for the Mountaineers.
Redshirt senior Hallie Portner, freshman Megan Yuan and redshirt junior Chelsea Jarvis also ran at the E.P. ‘Tom’ Saywer State Park on Saturday. Portner finished in 36th place while Yuan and Jarvis crossed the line in 55th and 242nd place, respectively.
The Mountaineers next competition will have them returning to the same course in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 13 for Pre-Nationals, with the race set to begin at 10:15 a.m.
