NORMAN, Okla. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped its second Big 12 road match to Oklahoma 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 12-25), Saturday at the McCasland Field House.
The Mountaineers (8-9, 0-4 Big 12) would take the first set before the Sooners (13-4, 2-1 Big 12) would come back to win the next three.
Tied at six in the first set, WVU used kills from freshmen outside hitters Nikki Attea
and Hannah Sackett
and two straight blocks from Sackett and sophomore middle blocker Evyn McCoy
to take an 11-7 lead. The Sooners would come back to tie the match at 14 with the teams trading points until 20 all. The Mountaineers then went on a 5-1 run off of kills from McCoy and junior outside hitter Elzbieta Klein
to take the first set 25-21.
Sackett would come out and tie the match at seven in the second set before kills from Sallie McLaurin would give Oklahoma a 12-8 lead. The Mountaineers would cut the lead down to two with another kill from Sackett, but a serving run by Grace Whitley would extend the Sooners’ lead and give them the second set.
WVU started with a strong 7-1 lead to begin the third set off of three straight service aces from McCoy. Oklahoma would slowly chip away at the lead to tie the match at 15 and used blocks from McLaurin and Julia Doyle to take a 20-17 lead. The Sooners capitalized off of WVU errors to go on a 5-3 run to win the third set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Serving runs from Carolina Weir and Doyle in the fourth set gave the Sooners a 20-7 lead and the momentum to finish the match.
Attea and Klein led WVU with 11 kills apiece while Sackett chipped in 10. Freshman setter Brittany Sample
recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 34 assists and 12 digs while freshman libero Anna Panagiotakopoulos
led all players with 18 digs.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, Oct. 3 for a match against Kansas at 6:30 p.m., before welcoming its last non-conference opponent, Duquesne, on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m., also at the Coliseum.
