MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s tennis team will travel to Wake Forest, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational this weekend, Oct. 5-7.

It will be the second-consecutive season that the Mountaineers have participated in the invitational and will be the next to last event of WVU’s 2012 fall season.

Teams competing alongside WVU this weekend are Winthrop, Radford, Richmond, Davidson, Louisville, Elon, Wake Forest, UNC-Greensboro, East Tennessee State, Stetson, Charlotte, Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Navy and Campbell.

“With each tournament that comes, we are excited to get out on the court because we want to see how these girls respond to the competition,” said coach Tina Samara. “We have done some great things this fall, but we have to continue to work on our consistency in matches. We want our girls to fight for every point and every ball.”

As the Mountaineers head into the Wake Forest Invitational, senior Emily Mathis leads WVU in singles wins this fall, with a 4-2 record.

In overall wins, Mathis is tied with freshman Vivian Tsui with six victories.

“Emily has fought hard this fall – there is no doubt about that,” Samara said. “Vivian has been a bit of a surprise for us, and has shown us in practice from time to time that she has the ability to play at a high level.”

With the fall season nearly over, Samara says she likes what she has seen from her team, but knows that there is still time to improve before the spring season.

“We have seen some encouraging results during the fall season,” Samara said. “Our young players have responded to the challenge of the college game, while our veteran players have continued to grow and develop. Each of our players stands to benefit from the competition we will be facing this weekend, as well as our play at the ITA Regionals in two weeks.”

Action is set to begin at 9 a.m. each morning, and a recap of each day’s action will be available on WVUsports.com following the completion of competition.
