MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team had a successful first day at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C., as it won four of six singles matches and three of five doubles matches.
“Overall, it was not a bad day at all,” said coach Tina Samara. “We saw something positive out of each of our players throughout the course of today’s play.”
Earning singles wins for the Mountaineers were sophomore Ikttesh Chahal
, freshman Hailey Barrett
, senior Emily Mathis
and freshman Vivian Tsui
“Ikttesh and Hailey did a great job today,” Samara said. “I feel that Ikttesh made that initial breakthrough that we have been waiting for.”
In doubles play, Mathis and fellow senior Audrey Wooland
were able to score two doubles victories, while Chahal and Barrett combined for the third doubles win of the day for WVU.
“Emily and Audrey fought hard in their second doubles match,” Samara said. “Both were off a bit, but showed senior leadership by never quitting and finding a way to win.”
In its second double match of the day, Chahal and Barrett were defeated, but Samara commended them for their effort.
“Ikttesh and Hailey battled in second match, but they fell short,” Samara said. “They just need to believe in what they do, which will come in time.”
Action will continue tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., and a recap of the day’s play will be available on WVUsports.com after the completion of competition. Results
