Tennis Continues Strong Play in North Carolina
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With one day of strong play already under its belt, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team had a second-consecutive day of strong play at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C.
“We had another solid day today,” said coach Tina Samara. “We saw a lot of the things that we saw yesterday, but these came against opponents of an even higher caliber.”
Senior Audrey Wooland led the way for the Mountaineers with two decisive singles wins.
“Audrey finally played the way that we know she can,” Samara said. “The first opponent she squared off against won 23 matches last season. It says something when you are able to beat the No. 1 player from Stetson.”
Also putting together a strong effort for WVU was senior Emily Mathis. The Flower Mound, Texas, native earned one singles victory, but fell short against a tough opponent in her second singles match.
“Emily had a great battle with a very solid player from a ranked program (College of Charleston),” Samara said. “She ran out of gas in the second match and acknowledged that she still needs to get more fit.”
Also earning singles wins for the Mountaineers was sophomore Ikttesh Chahal and freshman Hailey Barrett.
“Hailey played well and battled in the first match, but she needs to continue to work on closing out games and sets,” Samara said. “Ikttesh had her chances in her first match, but she didn’t capitalize. She did a good job in her next match against a solid player from Richmond.”
Barrett and Chahal, along with freshman Vivian Tsui and Irinka Toidze, provided doubles wins for WVU.
The Mountaineers will resume play at the Wake Forest Invitational at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
