MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Women’s soccer player Kate Schwindel has been named West Virginia University’s Athlete of the Week for her effort in WVU’s two Big 12 road wins over the weekend.

The Livingston, N.J., native helped the Mountaineers remain in first place in the Big 12 standings with a five-point weekend. Against Kansas, Schwindel scored the game-winner for her eighth of the season.

On Sunday, Schwindel was brilliant in dishing out assists on all three goals in WVU’s 3-2 win at Iowa State.

The three-assist day is the second of her career, matching her three-helper day against High Point earlier this season.

The three assists tie a school record for assists in a single game.

With three regular-season matches remaining, West Virginia plays host to Baylor on Friday, Oct. 12, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. for “Senior Night” for Nicolette DeLaurentis, Bry McCarthy, Bri Rodriguez and Mallory Smith.

Forward Kate Schwindel’s first-half goal and a strong outing from goalkeeper Sara Keane pushed No. 16 West Virginia past host Kansas, 1-0, on Oct. 5, at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex … despite playing into a strong wind during the opening half, Schwindel scored the game-winner in the 43rd minute on a blast inside the left post … Bri Rodriguez and Amanda Hill each notched their first assists of the season on the game-winner … in the 80th minute, Keane came up with a brilliant diving stop to preserve the shutout – her sixth of the season … Kansas outshot West Virginia, 23-14, as WVU was paced by Schwindel’s game-best seven shots … on Oct. 7, Silva scored a pair of second-half goals to lead WVU past Iowa State, 3-2, at Cyclone Sports Complex … after Iowa State scored a goal in the first 73 seconds of the match, WVU answered with a score from forward Kelsie Maloney in the 28th minute … West Virginia increased its lead with goals from Silva in the 57th and 70th minutes, with Schwindel picking up assists on both scores … Silva’s two goals give her 10 on the season to lead the Mountaineers … the Mountaineers finished with a 21-13 shot advantage, including 13 shots on-goal – tying a season high.

The WVU men’s soccer team will play host to Mid-American Conference foe Hartwick on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

The Mountaineers went 1-1 last week with a 3-2 loss to Elon last Tuesday and a 2-0 win over MAC opponent Buffalo on Sunday … both matches were held at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

West Virginia held a 2-1 lead over Elon before allowing two goals in the final three minutes to fall 3-2 at home … senior Eric Schoenle and freshman Jamie Merriam each scored goals in the match, senior Peabo Doue, sophomore Andy Bevin and freshmen Zak Leedom and Majed Osman added assists … Bevin scored the eventual game-winning goal against Buffalo on a turnaround 10-yard shot, while Schoenle scored less than six minutes later on a penalty kick … Osman and junior Craig Stephens recorded assists against Buffalo … senior keeper Yale Tiley recorded his first career shutout, making one save against the Bulls.

In the match against Kansas, WVU took a set from a ranked opponent for the first time this season … the last time the Mountaineers took a set from a ranked opponent was in 2010, when WVU went five sets with then-No. 23 Cincinnati … freshman outside hitter Hannah Sackett led WVU over the two matches this past week with 22 kills, 2.44 digs per set and a .358 hitting percentage … Sackett’s 20 kills against Duquesne was a match high and was the fifth time this season that she led the team in kills … the Somers, Mont., native is currently first on the team with 187 kills and 2.67 kills per set … sophomore middle blocker Evyn McCoy posted three service aces in both matches to bring her total up to 26 service aces for the season … McCoy is ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 in service aces (26) and No. 5 in service aces per set (0.36) … freshman setter Brittany Sample posted her 10th double-double of the season against Duquesne with 45 assists and 13 digs … the Lewisville, Texas native is currently tied for first in the Big 12 in double-doubles.

C … it was the second consecutive season that WVU competed in the tournament, which featured competition from Winthrop, Radford, Richmond, Davidson, Louisville, Elon, Wake Forest, UNC-Greensboro, East Tennessee State, Stetson, Charlotte, Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Navy, Campbell.

Three players placed at the invitational … senior Emily Mathis and freshman Hailey Barrett placed third in their singles brackets, while sophomore Ikttesh Chahal placed fifth her bracket … senior Audrey Wooland won the consolation portion of her bracket in dominating fashion, as she closed out the tournament with two flawless performances (6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0) … Mathis holds the team lead with seven singles wins … in total, Mathis has team-high 11 overall victories this season … as a team, the Mountaineers own a 36-36 record in all matches played this fall, after a weekend in which they were 11-7 overall.

The West Virginia University rifle team (1-0, 1-0 GARC) opened up their 2012-2013 season by defeating No.5 Army 4709-4631 in both guns. WVU won smallbore with a score of 2348-2303 and air rifle with a score of 2361-2328.

The Mountaineers shot a school record of4709 ... the previous record was 4704, and was last shot at the GARC Championships in 2011 ... a school smallbore record of 2348 was set as well ... the previous smallbore full course record of 2337 was set at the 2011 GARC Championships ... six Mountaineers combined for the team total record: senior Petra Zublasing, junior Daniel Sojka, sophomores Thomas Kyanko (smallbore score only), Meelis Kiisk (air rifle score only) and Taylor Ciotola, and freshman Garrett Spurgeon ...
