Rifle Ranked No. 1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a record-setting opening win at Army, the West Virginia University rifle team has earned the No. 1 ranking in the first regular-season Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.

The Mountaineers, ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll, moved up two spots based on their program-best 4709 score at then-No. 5 Army (4631) on Oct. 7.

Today’s top billing is the Mountaineers’ first No. 1 ranking since earning the spot in the Oct. 25, 2011 poll. Prior to that, WVU was last ranked No. 1 heading into the 2011 NCAA Championships.

“Today’s ranking is good, but a No. 1 ranking is not our main goal,” says seventh-year coach Jon Hammond. “Having said that, it’s a huge confidence boost for the team. When you shoot a school record, you’re going to be right up there with the other top teams. This ranking is the reward for shooting so well this past weekend. Now, we have to keep our heads down and continue to work hard throughout the fall season.”

Defending national champion TCU dropped one spot to No. 2 after shooting 4702 in a win at The Citadel on Oct. 6. Jacksonville State moved up four spots to No. 3, and Nebraska jumped five spots to No. 4. Alaska-Fairbanks dropped back one spot to No. 5.

On the heels of yesterday’s loss, Army dropped one spot to No. 6. Mississippi also dropped one spot to No. 7, while Murray State held steady at No. 8. Navy and Memphis entered the top 10 at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Today’s rankings are based on each team’s most-recent score. Teams that have not opened their 2012-13 seasons are not included in the rankings.

The Mountaineers (1-0, 1-0 GARC) stay on the road and compete against No. 12 Ohio State and No. 15 Akron on Oct. 13, at OSU’s Converse Hall, in Columbus, Ohio.
