MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2012-13 season with the West Virginia State Games, hosted by Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., on Friday evening.

The men hold a commanding lead with 290 points, nearly 100 points ahead of the closet competitor. The women have scored 292 points, followed by Marshall with 244 points.

“I was pleased with the women’s team and the energy and leadership they raced with,” coach Vic Riggs says. “Our youth showed on the men’s side today and I was disappointed in our effort and leadership. We need to have some of our men step up and guide this team.”

Senior Rachael Burnett started the individual portion of the meet breaking her own pool record by nearly five seconds with a victory in the 500 free (4:54.84). Burnett broke another pool record in the 200 IM (2:05.18). Seniors Kata Fodor and Breanna McCann took second behind Burnett in the 500 free (5:02.29) and 200 IM (2:07.89), respectively.

Freshman Chase Williams earned his first collegiate victory in a time of 1:57.22 for a close victory in the 200 IM. Two more newcomers placed first and second in the 50 free for the men’s squad. Sophomore Julian Vialette finished first (21.44), followed closely by Ross Glegg (21.65).

The Mountaineer relay squads swept the 200 free and 400 medley relays, with the women’s 400 medley relay taking first in a pool-record time of 3:54.99. Junior Danielle Smith, sophomore Jenelle Zee, sophomore Julie Ogden and Burnett combined for the win.

The evening completed with the women’s 3-meter dive, where sophomore Haily VandePoel and freshman Lindsay Schmidt took first and second, respectively. VandePoel won the event with a top score of 271.65 points, while Schmidt scored 256.50 points.

Action will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m. A complete recap will follow on WVUsports.com.
