Cross Country Finishes Strong at Louisville

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– In its second time running the course this season, the West Virginia University cross country team placed in the top two for the second meet in a row at the Division I Pre-Nationals 6k Black Race, Saturday, at the E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

The Mountaineers finished with 157 points for second out of 26 teams while Utah Valley won the race with 154 points. South Carolina came in third with 186 points, while Utah State and Furman finished fourth and fifth with 186 and 188 points, respectively.

“Today was a nice little tune up for the Big 12 Championships meet,” coach Sean Cleary says. “I saw some positive races by a number of people on the team. Sarah Martinelli is rounding into shape and I would expect to see our best performance of the year in two weeks.”

Junior Sarah Martinelli crossed the line first for the Mountaineers for the first time this season with an 11th place finish and a 6k personal-best time of 21:50.2. Junior Jordan Hamric finished in the top 20 for the third time this season with a 19th place finish and a personal-best 6k time of 21:57.

In her first season of racing, sophomore Kelly Williams contributed big for WVU by being the third runner to score for the Mountaineers with a 28th place finish. Seniors Aubrey Moskal and Hallie Portner rounded out the top five runners for the Mountaineers by finishing in 36th and 63rd place, respectively.

Freshmen Megan Yuan and Sydney Scott, junior Chelsea Jarvis and sophomore Allison Pettit also competed for WVU on Saturday.

The Mountaineers will wait two weeks before traveling to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 Championship meet on Oct. 27 at 10 a.m.
