MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1 ranked West Virginia rifle team defeated No. 12 Ohio State and No. 15 Akron, on Oct. 13, at Converse Hall, in Columbus, Ohio.

The Mountaineers (3-0, 1-0 GARC) outshot the Buckeyes and Zips in both events at the tri-meet. WVU shot a 2336 in smallbore and a 2354 in air rifle, for a team total of 4690. Ohio State shot a 2275 in smallbore and a 2319 in air rifle, for an aggregate score of 4594. Akron shot 2277 in smallbore and 2294 in air rifle, giving the Zips a team total of 4571. WVU’s win over OSU and Akron counts as two victories for the team.

“I think we had a good day. It was a solid performance overall. Our smallbore was really consistent,” coach Jon Hammond says. “Having all five team members shooting over 580 is really solid and consistent.”

Six Mountaineers combined for the team total score, including Petra Zublasing, Garrett Spurgeon, Daniel Sojka, Thomas Kyanko, Taylor Ciotola and Meelis Kiisk.

Senior Zublasing led the way with a first-place finish overall with an 1184 combined score. Freshman Spurgeon shot 1173 and finished second with fellow teammate Ciotola shooting 1172 for third.

Zublasing, an Appiano, Italy, native, finished first in smallbore (199 prone, 195 standing, 198 kneeling). There was a two-way tie for first between Zublasing and Ciotola in air rifle, with each of the Mountaineers shooting a 592. Spurgeon’s 200 prone smallbore mark matched a school record.

The win was the team’s 11th win over Akron since 1952, and the 39th win over Ohio State since 1974. The Mountaineers open their home season at the WVU Rifle Range on Tuesday, Oct. 16, against Memphis.
