MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coming off of its strongest performance of the spring season, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team will compete in its final fall tournament of the 2012 season, traveling to Blacksburg, Va., for the 2012 ITA Atlantic Regionals on Oct. 19-23.

“We are excited to see how we stack up individually, and as a team, against the top teams in our region,” says coach Tina Samara. “We have had a couple players start to find their game as the fall has progressed, and others have begun to find a little bit of consistency. This will be a good test for the girls, and hopefully, a good close to our fall season.”

The Mountaineers head into the regionals with senior Emily Mathis leading the team in singles wins and combined wins. The Flower Mound, Texas, native sports a 7-3 mark in singles play and an 11-6 ledger overall.

“Emily has stuck to the game plan throughout the fall season,” Samara says. “Her focus, along with her tendency to fight for every point, has allowed her to be successful. We are all excited to see what she is able to do, as she is carrying momentum into our final fall tournament.”

Also looking to join Mathis in the double-digit combined win column will be freshman Hailey Barrett, who has a 9-8 overall record this season, including a 6-5 mark in singles play.

“We have been impressed with what have seen from Hailey thus far,” Samara says. “She has defeated some quality competition this fall. In order to keep getting better, she will need to improve upon her consistency from the beginning until the end of the match.”

Senior Audrey Wooland, who was dominate on her way to winning her consolation bracket at the Wake Forest Invitational, owns four singles wins and seven combined wins during the fall season.

“Audrey showed what she was capable of doing in the Wake Forest Invitational, as she closed out her tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win and a 6-0, 6-0 win,” Samara says. “After not competing last season, it is good to see her rounding back into the form that we were used to seeing at Louisiana-Lafayette.”

In their action two weeks ago at the Wake Forest Invitational, the Mountaineers posted an 11-7 record and saw three student-athletes earn top-five placements. Mathis and Barrett took third, while sophomore Ikttesh Chahal placed fifth.

A full recap of each day’s action at the ITA Atlantic Regionals will be available on WVUsports.com after the completion of competition.
