MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In the second day of the ITA Atlantic Regionals being held in Blacksburg, Va., senior Audrey Wooland was the lone Mountaineer player to score to a victory.

“Audrey took care of business in her singles match today,” said coach Tina Samara. “She played like we know she can.”

Wooland was able to knock off Morgan State’s Mikola Cooper, 6-1, 6-1, and will square off against fourth-seeded Erin Vierra of Virginia in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw.

Also in action in the main singles draw was freshman Hailey Barrett and sophomore Ikttesh Chahal. Barrett was defeated by second-seeded Li Xi of Virginia, 6-1, 6-0, while Chahal lost to Penn State’s Jacqueline Zuhse, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

“Hailey played against a girl who had been ranked in the top 50 of the ITF world rankings,” Samara said. “Hopefully, she walks away having learned from an opponent of that caliber.

“Ikttesh played a very solid first set, but did not stick to the game plan on big points,” Samara said. “That was the difference in her match.”

In doubles play, the duo of Wooland and fellow senior Emily Mathis, along with Barrett and Chahal, were defeated by their opponents.

“We did not take advantage of our opportunities in doubles play,” Samara said. “Hailey and Ikttesh were serving with a chance to win, but were unable to capitalize. Emily and Audrey were up 5-2 in their match, but also couldn’t close it out. We have to learn to win matches instead of waiting for our opponent to lose.”
