MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team completed its 2012 fall season on Sunday afternoon, as it finished play at the ITA Atlantic Regionals held in Blacksburg, Va.

Senior Audrey Wooland was the lone remaining Mountaineer competing in the tournament’s main singles draw.

In her matchup against fourth-seeded Erin Vierra of Virginia, Wooland was defeated 6-1, 6-3.

“Audrey played a very tough opponent, who was ranked as high as No. 29 last season,” said coach Tina Samara. “Today, Audrey’s forehand was not as sharp as normal. Against a player of Vierra’s caliber, that made a huge difference in the match. However, Audrey walks away knowing that she can compete with the best when she is playing the level that she is capable of playing at.”

Overall, the Mountaineers finished the 2012 fall season with two players, senior Emily Mathis and freshman Hailey Barrett, in the double-digit win column and had three players place at the Wake Forest Invitational – Barrett, Mathis and freshman Ikttesh Chahal.

In addition, Wooland finished her fall season with a consolation bracket victory at the Wake Forest Invitational and a total of eight victories.

“The theme of this tournament overall is that we put ourselves in a position to win almost every match,” Samara said. “This is a huge improvement from a year ago. We now have a team that knows it can play with the best teams. We will go home and use this to prepare for the spring season, where we will be meeting a lot these teams again.”

WVU will return to the court for the beginning of their spring season on Jan. 19, when it opens up with a home match against Ohio State.
