MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Rachael Burnett
and sophomore Haily VandePoel
of the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams have earned weekly Big 12 Conference honors for their respective performances last Friday against Penn State.
Burnett was named the Co-Women’s Swimmer of the Week after racking up three first-place finishes in the 100 free, 200 free and 500 free. Burnett currently holds the Conference’s top times in both the 200 free and 1650 free. Nationally, Burnett has the No. 11 time in the 1650 free, No. 18 time in the 500 free and No. 22 time in the 200 free. Burnett has won the 500 free 27 of 29 times she has swum it and now has 67 individual first-place finishes in her career.
VandePoel broke the school record with a first-place finish on the 3-meter board (300.00 points) against Penn State, while also already qualifying for the 2013 NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships.
Texas’ Clay Youngquist and Sean O’Brien earned the Men’s Swimmer of the Week and Men’s Diver of the Week, respectively, while Laura Sogar of Texas was named Co-Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
Both teams will be in action on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Villanova. The women also will be taking on James Madison. Action is set to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
