No.1 West Virginia Set to Host No. 12 Navy
LIVE SCORES MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- The No.1- ranked West Virginia University rifle team will host No. 12 Navy Saturday, Oct. 27, at the WVU Rifle Range, at 8 a.m. The Mountaineers (4-0, 2-0 GARC) are returning to competition after shooting a NCAA-best team score of 4717 during their win over No. 8 Memphis on Oct. 16. “We’ve gotten off to a great start this season,” says coach Jon Hammond. “They are shooting and progressing really well.” The Mountaineers are 21-8 all-time against the Midshipmen (1-0). Navy defeated the Devils of the University of Sciences Philadelphia on Oct. 13, with a score of 4623-4334. “What I would like to see is consistency; to continue to have solid, consistent performances,” says Hammond. “I’m not so worried about what the numbers are or what the specific scores are. I just want them to continue what they’ve been doing in training.” Senior Petra Zublasing led the Mountaineers to the win against Memphis, shooting 587 smallbore and 597 air rifle, for a combined score of 1184. Freshman Garrett Spurgeon shot a personal best of 589 smallbore and another personal best of 592 in air rifle, placing him second with a total score of 1181. Sophomore Taylor Ciotola tied Zublasing in smallbore and shot 591 air rifle, for a combined score of 1178, placing third. “So far were off to a great start and I am happy,” concludes Hammond.
