Football Player Quotes
MORGANTOWN, W. Va.: The West Virginia University football team addressed members of the media on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers play host to TCU on Saturday, November 3, at 3 p.m. on FOX.
On what he saw in the Kansas State film
We weren’t getting our feet set. We let people come off the edge. We just weren’t able to pick up the right blitzes at the right time.
On getting back to the fundamentals following two straight losses
With the bye week, that’s all we focus on, just getting back to the fundamentals of the game, getting back to square one. The bye week is a lot like camp, you’re almost coming in to the first week again. It’s kind of nice to get back into the film room and start studying.
On TCU’s defensive ends rushing ability
When Jeff Braun and I watched the film, we were focusing on how long their arms were. I was definitely envious because of my short arms. Luckily I don’t have to go against those guys. They’re definitely good speed rushers who like to come off the ball.
On coming off the bye week
It was actually exciting. We pretty much had four days off except for a light Sunday practice. It was exciting coming back out there today. Usually when you have a game on Saturday, you come back Sunday and it feels same old, same old. Having a little time off and knowing what you have in front of you, it gets exciting again.
On the freshman getting more reps and how they respond
They’re getting better every day. You can see it from camp to now that they’ve gotten much better, and they’re going to be great players in the future. Still, being a true freshman being thrown into the fire of the Big 12, it’s like what I felt like last year against LSU. It felt like everything was going extremely fast, which is what they’re experiencing on a week-in, week-out basis. They’re taking it in and they’re going to be great players once they have a spring and another season under their belt.
On conversations between him and coach Holgorsen and if he feels he’s being too hard on himself
Dana (Holgorsen) knows that I am my biggest critic, and I’m always going to be hard on myself. I try to keep things in perspective and understand that it’s a team game, and no one man can win or lose a game. It is eleven men on both sides of the ball including special teams, and we all have to come together and play as a team. It’s not the end of the world - we’ve lost two games. It’s something that we don’t want to ever want to happen, but you have to play the cards you’re dealt with. Right now we are in the situation where we just have to win.
On the specific things he’s done to get back to winning football
I’ve continued to work hard. I’ve continued to stay confident. I’ve continued to believe in my guys and believe in this coaching staff and just trust what’s around me. I understand that my job is to play quarterback and quarterback only, and to not take on any other role. I’m going to do my job to the best of my ability and let things play out.
On the new defensive scheme this season compared to last
I think it’s similar. You get your pre-snap reads, and you just play football. No matter what defense you’re in you read and react, so I think it’s all the same.
On the differences he’s seen between Big 12 and Big East quarterback play
They’re pretty tough. With the quarterbacks in the Big East they were tough. They were physically and mentally tough kids, but the quarterbacks in the Big 12 are playmakers.
On the different type of matchup between TCU and the previous two games
Their quarterback can sling the ball. He’s a really athletic and a tough kid. They’ve got good playmakers on the outside. I think they’re going to try a sling it around a little bit. They’re fast and athletic. Upfront, they’re athletic. I think passing will be what they’re going to try and focus on with us.
