Renzi Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University wrestling team member Ross Renzi has been named this week’s Varsity Sports Athlete of the Week.

Renzi, who redshirted last season, earned a pin in the first match of his collegiate career against Johns Hopkins’ Christian Ostrowski. The win by fall came at the 2:09 mark of the match.

In his match against Maryland’s Josh Snook, Renzi very nearly earned another pin in the second period on his way to a 6-3 decision victory.

Eighth-seeded TCU stunned top-seeded West Virginia, 2-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship on Oct. 31 at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas … the Horned Frogs scored on a pair of corner kicks, nearly identical goals, capitalizing on successful headers at the back post … the Mountaineers generated several scoring chances, but came up empty on all tries, led by Kate Schwindel’s game-best eight shots and a feisty effort from midfielder Bri Rodriguez … WVU finished with a 25-12 shot advantage and 9-6 edge in corner kicks … more than a half dozen of the Mountaineers’ shots were blocked, as the TCU defense kept WVU’s offense in front of them for most of the night … the loss snapped WVU’s 13-match unbeaten streak, pushing its record to 11-4-4.

The WVU men’s soccer team goes into the Mid-American Conference Championship as the No. 3 seed and will play No. 2-seeded Northern Illinois in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. … No. 1 Akron serves as the host of the tournament and will play No. 4-seeded Bowling Green … the winner of the two semifinals will meet on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 4:30 p.m.

The WVU men’s soccer team used a late goal last Saturday to qualify for the MAC Championship, winning 1-0 at Bowling Green in its last regular season match.
