AKRON, Ohio – The West Virginia men’s soccer team was knocked out of the MAC Championship in the semifinal round by Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Friday evening at First Energy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.

Jayson LeSeth notched the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute off a direct kick from just outside the left side of the box. LeSeth sent a curling line drive shot from 20 yards out that made its way through the WVU defense and into the back of the net.

“Unfortunately it’s typical of our season, we give up a goal every three or four shots,” coach Marlon LeBlanc says. “The way we gave up the goal was pretty sad I thought. It was untouched and it went straight through. That wasn’t necessarily it, a lot of missed chances and lack of quality in the final third really hurt us.”

The Mountaineers pressured the entire second half and had some chances just miss. Junior Craig Stephens took a blast from 25 yards out that deflected off the left post of the NIU frame.

Senior Peabo Doue had two headers off of set pieces, one in the 75th minute that sailed over the crossbar and one in the 82nd minute that went wide right.

Sophomore Andy Bevin nearly had a goal off a header in the 61st minute, but Husky keeper Jordan Godsey corralled the ball.

West Virginia held the shot advantage at 13-6, with Doue taking a game-high three shots. Four Mountaineers had two shots apiece, while six different NIU players took one shot.

The Mountaineers will now wait until the NCAA Championship selection show to learn their NCAA fate. The show is on Monday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 p.m., and will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.
