MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Just eight weeks away from its 2013 season opener, the West Virginia University gymnastics team will hold its annual Fall Classic intrasquad, today, inside Cary Gym, at 3:30 p.m.

The Mountaineers will be split into two teams – the Pilgrims and the Turkeys – and the squads will compete routines in front of judges for the first time this preseason. Scores will be awarded, and second-year coach Jason Butts will declare a winning team.

“We always look forward to today,” Butts explained. “This is the first time the team will compete in official uniform in front of officials and a small crowd. We participate in a lot of intrasquads throughout preseason, but today is the official kickoff of the 2013 season. Today will let us know where we stand and where we need to improve in the next few weeks.”

Seniors Chelsea Goldschrafe and Kaylyn Millick will lead the Pilgrim team, while classmate Alaska Richardson and junior Hope Sloanhoffer will anchor the Turkey team.

Also competing for the Pilgrims are: juniors Amanda Carpenter, Bethany Yurko and Erica Smith, sophomores Dayah Haley and Jamie Judge and freshman Jaida Lawrence.

The Turkey team is comprised of: junior Makenzie Bristol, sophomore Maci Sump, Beth Deal and Lia Salzano, and freshmen Melissa Idell and Gina Costa.

A recap of today’s action will be posted tomorrow at WVUgymnastics.com.
