– The West Virginia University Swimming and diving squads started off the Pitt Invitational with strong showings from several members on Friday evening.
Three wins were recorded in the first day of action, with sophomore Julien Vialette taking the 50 free with a time of 20.37 for the men’s team, the women’s team of senior Nikki Vetterlein
, senior Breanna McCann
, sophomore Julie Ogden
and junior Eva Burlingham
won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:44.99. The third win of the night was secured by the diving team, with freshman Christian Parker
winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 319.25.
“We had a strong night of swims. There were some real breakout swims tonight, as well as top performances by the divers,” coach Vic Riggs says. “Our team definitely rises to the occasion in finals and we saw that tonight.”
Other strong showings by the Mountaineer women’s swimmers included the 200 free relay team of Burlingham, junior Danielle Smith
, senior Rachael Burnett
and freshman Jaimee Gillmore
taking second (1:34.57), Burnett also placed second in the 500 free (4:50.81), and sixth in the 200 IM (2:07.91), while Gillmore earned third in the 50 free (23.57). Breanna McCann
added a third-place finish in the 200 IM (2:02.18). Senior Kata Fodor
also placed sixth in the 500 free with a time of 4:59.13.
For the men’s swimmers, sophomore Daeton Davenport
took third in the 500 free (4:29.53), freshman Chase Williams
placed sixth in the 200 IM (1:54.06), freshman Ross Glegg
placed fourth in the 50 free (20.65) and the 400 medley relay team of freshman Andrew Marsh
, sophomore Christopher Brill
, Williams and Vialette took fourth with a time of 3:24.39.
For the diving squads, strong showings were found in each event, with freshman Lindsay Schmidt
and sophomore Haily VandePoel
taking third (255.95) and fourth (247.55), respectively on the women’s 1-meter. Junior Richard Pokorny
added a second-place finish on the 3-meter board with a score of 306.00 for the men.
