Baseball Adds 15 for 2014 Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Randy Mazey announced the signing of 15 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday morning. The signees will join Mazey’s squad next fall to prepare for the 2014 season.

“I am extremely excited about the student-athletes we signed in the early signing period,” coach Randy Mazey says. “After a late start recruiting the 2013 class, coach (Derek) Matlock and coach (Steven) Trout worked tirelessly to put together an outstanding class that we feel will help us compete in the Big 12 as soon as they arrive on campus.”

Eight of the 15 signees will join the team out of high school, including four from Texas, one from Illinois, one from Ohio, one from Pennsylvania and one from Virginia. The Mountaineers added seven junior college prospects.

Coming from the high school ranks are pitchers Chad Donato (Cypress, Texas), Steven Duby (Maumee, Ohio), Corley Huffstickler (Frisco, Texas), Dakota Mills (Meadows Place, Texas) and Nick Wernke (Oswego, Ill.). Shaun Corso (Lancaster, Pa.) represents the lone position player, while Jackson Cramer (Coppell, Texas) and Jordan Sergent (Chesapeake, Va.) will be two-way players for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers’ junior college recruits include pitchers Michael Bennett (Bandon, Ore.), Alec Horvath (Sugarland, Texas) and Ross Vance (McKinney, Texas). Cameron O’Brien (Tulsa, Okla.) comes to WVU as a catcher, while infielder Cody Semler (Lake City, Fla.), outfielder Byron Reichstein (St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada) and outfielder/pitcher Trevor Simms (Hurst, Texas) round out the class.

The recruiting class provides versatility for West Virginia, featuring eight pitchers, one catcher, two infielders, one outfielder and three two-way players.

Michael Bennett, RHP, 6-1, 195, Bandon, Ore./Feather River College (Calif.)

  • Led Feather River College to regional and conference championships in 2012
  • Tops among pitchers in appearances (16), games started (12), wins (10), complete games (2), innings pitched (98.2) and strikeouts (65)
  • Finished with a 2.10 ERA, tops among starters, and averaged six strikeouts per game
  • Named the Golden Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, while also being selected to the All-Northern California team
  • Three-sport letterwinner in football, basketball and baseball at Bandon High
  • Played in the 2011 Oregon 3A/2A/1A All-Star Series
  • Two-time Oregon 3A All-State First Team and 2011 Oregon 3A All-State Pitcher of the Year

Shaun Corso, 3B/SS, 6-3, 200, Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield High

  • Led Hempfield High to a 17-5 record and the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 Championship in 2012
  • Hit three doubles, one triple, four home runs, 15 RBIs and 23 runs scored
  • Two-time All-Lancaster Lebanon League Section 1 Second Team member
  • Named 2012 Preseason Pennsylvania All-State and a Top 50 player in Pennsylvania by ESPN HS
  • Rated as the No. 7 player in Pennsylvania by Prep Baseball Report
  • Played in the inaugural Big 26 Baseball Classic between Pennsylvania and Maryland
  • Named the 2012 High School Defensive Player of the Year and the 2011 High School Offensive Player of the Year
  • Member of the Mid-Atlantic Rookies travel squad, playing in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship
  • Played in the 2012 South Atlantic Border Battle
  • Ranked in the Top 500 nationally, No. 5 player in Pennsylvania and No. 61 shortstop in the Class of 2013 by Perfect Game
  • Earned 2012 Perfect Game USA Preseason Underclassmen All-America High Honorable Mention honors

Jackson Cramer, 1B/RHP, 6-4, 220, Coppell, Texas/Coppell High

  • Entering senior season for coach Kendall Clark at Coppell High
  • Finished 2012 season with a .305 batting average, five doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and a .500 on-base percentage
  • Led District 5-5A in home runs in 2012
  • Named to the District 5-5A All-District Second Team as a junior
  • Member of the Dallas Area Metro Scout League All-Star team
  • Attended the MLB Showcase at Minute Maid Park, hosted by the Texas Scout Association
  • Invited to play in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship with the DBAT/MSL All-Stars
  • Ranked in the Top 1000 nationally by Perfect Game

Chad Donato, RHP, 6-0, 185, Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods High

  • Three-year lettermen at Cypress Woods High
  • Recorded four wins, 40 strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA in 20.0 innings of work in 2012
  • Batted .357 at the plate with five doubles and one home run
  • Named to the District 17-5A All-District Honorable Mention as a junior
  • Ranked in the Top 500 nationally, No. 160 right-handed pitcher nationally, No. 57 player in Texas and No. 37 right-handed pitcher in Texas in the Class of 2013 by Perfect Game
  • Named a 2012 Perfect Game USA Underclassmen All-America High Honorable Mention
  • Played in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship with Action Baseball, and was named to the all-tournament team
  • Pitched four innings in one appearance, earning the win by allowing two hits and striking out nine

Steven Duby, RHP, 6-0, 180, Maumee, Ohio/Maumee High

  • Two-way player for coach Cam Coutcher at Maumee High
  • Went 4-2 with a 2.07 ERA, four complete games and three shutouts in eight starts during junior season
  • Led team with 73 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched, allowing 14 earned runs
  • Team leader in hits (34), doubles (11) and RBIs (29), finishing with a .354 batting average as an infielder
  • Was named All-Ohio Second Team, All-Northwest Ohio First Team and All-Northern Lakes League First Team in 2012
  • Finished 2011 with a 4-0 record, 2.00 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 21 innings
  • Ranked in the Top 1000 nationally by Perfect Game
  • Named a 2012 Perfect Game USA Underclassmen All-America High Honorable Mention
  • Starting quarterback on the football team, throwing 106 completions for 1,724 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2012

Alec Horvath, RHP, 6-6, 200, Sugarland, Texas/Hill College

  • Entering his sophomore season at Hill College after leading the team to a 34-22 record in 2012
  • Completed the season with a .325 batting average, 14 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples and 16 RBIs
  • Also saw time on the mound, making eight appearances with a 3.52 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 30.2 innings
  • Two-year letterman in baseball and three-year letterman in basketball at Clements High
  • Named to the 2011 All-District 23-5A First Team en route to leading baseball team to the District 23-5A Championship

Corley Huffstickler, RHP, 5-11, 160, Frisco, Texas/Airline High (La.)

  • Played for coach Toby Todd at Airline High in 2012 as a junior
  • Finished with a 8-4 record and a 1.42 ERA in 71.0 innings with 78 strikeouts
  • Named to the All-District 1-5A First Team, Shreveport Times All-City team and All-Bossier Parrish team in 2012
  • Previously played two seasons (2011-12) for Frisco High
  • Earned 2012 Perfect Game USA Underclassmen All-America Honorable Mention honors

Dakota Mills, RHP, 6-2, 195, Meadows Place, Texas/Dulles High

  • Helped Dulles High to a 27-9 record and the District 23-5A championship as a junior in 2012
  • Finished the season with a 9-2 record in 74 innings pitched, leading District 23-5A with a 0.66 ERA and ranking No. 2 in strikeouts with 101
  • Named the 2012 The Fort Bend Sun Pitcher of the Year, as well as being named to The Fort Bend Sun All-Sun First Team and All-District 23-5A First Team
  • Ranked in the Top 1000 nationally by Perfect Game
  • 2012 Houston TASO Championship MVP
  • Played in the 2012 Perfect Game WWBA World Championship with the Houston Heat, and was named to the all-tournament team
  • Pitched 4.2 innings in two appearances, allowing three hits and striking out nine

Cameron O’Brien, C, 6-0, 184, Tulsa, Okla./Northeast Texas CC (Texas)

  • Will play for Northeast Texas Community College in 2013 after transferring from Louisville
  • Hit .250 with four RBIs and three runs scored in 14 games and four starts at Louisville in 2012
  • Played four seasons of baseball for coach Scott Ellis at Bishop Kelley High
  • Earned all-state honors and was a three-time All-Metro selection
  • As a senior, hit .463 with 10 home runs, 18 doubles and eight stolen bases while leading Bishop Kelley to a state championship
  • High school career record holder in doubles (53) and sacrifices (42)
  • Three-year letterwinner in football as an outside linebacker earning all-conference honors
  • Also earned two letters in basketball as a shooting guard
  • Named to the 2009 Rawlings/Perfect Game All-West Region Second Team
  • Father, Charlie, played 15 seasons of Major League Baseball as a catcher while his brother, Chris, was a standout catcher at Wichita State and is currently in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system

Byron Reichstein, OF, 5-11, 180, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada/Navarro College (Texas)

  • Will be a sophomore as he enters his first season at Navarro College
  • Played for WVU assistant coach Steven Trout at Texarkana College in 2012, leading the team to 33-23 record
  • Region 14 East Conference Player of the Year and All-Region 14 First Team honoree
  • Led the team in batting average (.372), doubles (14), home runs (5), runs (40), RBIs (38), on-base percentage (.480), slugging percentage (.581) and on-base plus slugging (1.062)
  • Spent the summer of 2012 with the London Majors, batting .302 in 37 games with seven doubles, one home run and 15 RBIs
  • Previously played for the London Badger of the Baseball Ontario Adult League, where he was named the player of the year in 2011, recording a .404 batting average, six home runs, 61 RBIs and 38 stolen bases
  • Helped team to bronze in 2010 and gold in 2011 at the Baseball Canada Midget Championships
  • Member of the 2010 Ontario Youth Team that won silver at the Canada Cup
  • Was named to the Team Canada Junior National Team

Cody Semler, SS, 5-10, 185, Lake City, Fla./Weatherford College (Texas)

  • Batted .291 with 16 runs, five doubles, one home run and 13 RBIs as a freshman at Weatherford College in 2012
  • Drafted in the 37th round (1,133 overall) by the San Diego Padres in the 2011 MLB Draft
  • Batted .275 with four home runs and 20 RBIs as a senior at Allen High
  • All-District 8-5A Honorable Mention in 2010, batting .272 with one home run and 16 RBIs

Jordan Sergent, OF/LHP, 6-1, 185, Chesapeake, Va./Atlantic Shores Christian School

  • Three-year letterwinner entering senior season for coach Joe Agreste, Sr., father of former Mountaineer Joe Agreste, Jr., at Atlantic Shores Christian School
  • Led team in batting average (.489), hits (43) runs (42), triples (2), home runs (12), RBIs (42), on-base percentage (.589) and slugging percentage (1.023) in 2012
  • Also recorded seven doubles and 10 stolen bases
  • Went 6-2 on the mound in 10 starts with a 1.94 ERA, three complete games and two shutouts
  • Struck out 68 batters in 57.2 innings
  • Batted .356 with 22 runs, eight doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs during sophomore season
  • Finished 2011 with a 10-4 record in 16 appearances with a 2.56 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 71 innings of work
  • Named the Metro Conference Player of the Year, All-VISAA Division II First Team and All-Tidewater First Team following 2012 season
  • Earned Atlantic Shores Christian School Wendy’s Heisman Award in 2012
  • Named a finalist for the 2012 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Student-Athlete of the Year
  • Earned 2012 Perfect Game USA Underclassmen All-America Honorable Mention and 2012 Under Armour Preseason All-American honors
  • Invited to the 2012 East Coast Pro Showcase, 2012 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars and 2012 Border Battle Tournament

Trevor Simms, RHP/OF, 6-3, 195, Hurst, Texas/Weatherford College (Texas)

  • Will play for Weatherford College in 2013 after transferring from Rice
  • Made three appearances in relief, striking out three in two innings at Rice in 2012
  • Also served as the backup kicker on the Rice football team
  • 2011 Male Athlete of the Year at Liberty Christian High, leading the baseball team to a 20-10 record and into the finals of the TAPPS State Tournament
  • Texas Association of Private & Parochial Schools (TAPPS) All-State First Team honoree and All-District 1-5A in 2011
  • Went 10-0 with a 2.69 ERA as a senior, registering 93 strikeouts in 60 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .135 batting average
  • Went 4-1 with a save in nine appearances as a junior in 2010, averaging 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings
  • Member of the 2010 Texas Rangers Area Code Team who participated in the Area Code Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
  • Also competed earned four varsity letters in football and one in track & field
  • Earned all-state accolades as a kicker and receiver
  • TAPPS state champion in the 100- and 200-meter races

Ross Vance, LHP, 6-0, 165, McKinney, Texas/Dodge City CC (Kan.)

  • Entering sophomore season for coach Phil Stephenson at Dodge City Community College
  • Sat out the 2011 and 2012 campaigns at Paris Junior College after undergoing Tommy John surgery
  • All-District 13-3A Pitcher of the Year at Lovejoy High as a senior in 2010, finishing with a record of 8-4 and setting the single-season school record with 117 strikeouts
  • Earned All-District 13-3A First Team honors in 2009 after winning seven games with 81 strikeouts
  • State champion at Prairie Ridge High in Crystal Lake, Ill., as a sophomore in 2008

Nick Wernke, RHP, 6-4, 185, Oswego, Ill./Oswego High

  • Three-year two-way starter for coach Chris Neitzel at Oswego High
  • Finished 2012 with a 3-2 record and a 3.75 ERA in four starts
  • Recorded a .290 batting average, a .420 on-base percentage and led the team with 35 walks and five triples at the plate
  • Batted .444 in 15 games during 2010 season
