Cobbe, Smith Earn Weekly Big 12 Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Nathan Cobbe and junior Danielle Smith of the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams have earned weekly Big 12 Conference honors for their respective performances last weekend at the Pitt Invitational.

Cobbe was named the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week after having the best meet of his career to date. The Victoria, Australia native had two consolation first-place finishes in the 500 free (4:28.50) and the 200 back (1:50.81). Cobbe also swam in the 50 free (22.34), 100 free (48.73), 200 free (1:39.34), 100 back (53.13), 200 free relay (1:26.70), 400 free relay (3:00.30), 800 free relay (6:36.84) and 400 medley relay (3:33.10).

A native of Delray Beach, Fla., Smith earned the honor of Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Smith registered individual first-place finishes in the 100 back (54.02) and the 200 back (1:58.62), while finishing in first place as a member of the 400 free relay (3:24.73), 800 free relay (7:18.17) and 200 medley relay (1:42.26). Smith also competed in the 200 free (1:53.23), 500 free (4:55.24), 200 free relay (1:34.57) and 400 medley relay (3:45.35).

In the Big 12 rankings, Cobbe is No. 2 in the 500 free (4:28.50), No. 3 in the 200 free (1:39.34) and No. 6 in the 200 back (1:50.81), while Smith is ranked No. 1 in the 100 back (54.02), No. 1 in the 200 back (1:58.62) and No.5 in the 500 free (4:55.24)

Texas’ Will Chandler and Maren Taylor earned Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week and Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week, respectively.

This is the second group of Mountaineers to earn the weekly honors this season as senior Rachael Burnett was named the Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Haily VandePoel was named the Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week on Oct. 24.

The teams are now training for the U.S. Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas, held from Nov. 29 through Dec. 1. Both Cobbe and Smith will be competing for the Mountaineers.
