The 2012 West Virginia University volleyball season is now complete … the Mountaineers finished with an 8-22 overall record and an 0-16 mark in the Big 12.

- Last Week in Volleyball
The Mountaineers fell in their season finale at TCU on Saturday, Nov. 24, 3-0, at the University Recreation Center … junior outside hitter Elzbieta Klein led WVU with eight kills and only one error for a .350 hitting percentage … freshman outside hitter Nikki Attea posted a season- and career-high five service aces, including four in the second set alone … freshman libero Anna Panagiotakopoulos had her 13th double-digit dig match with 13 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Sackett finished first on the team with 267 kills, 2.54 kills per set and 29 service aces … the Somers, Mont., native finished the season ranked No. 7 in the Big 12 in service aces with 0.28 per set …Sackett led the team in kills in seven matches this season including a season- and career-high 23 against Loyola-Md. … on Aug. 27, Sackett became the first WVU student-athlete to earn a Big 12 Weekly Award, when she was named Big 12 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week … Attea finished second on the team with 246 kills and 2.28 kills per set, while also recording 140 digs and 59 total blocks … Attea also garnered a Big 12 Weekly Award when she was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Sept. 17 … despite sitting out six matches, Panagiotakopoulos still finished first on the team with 297 digs and 3.38 digs per set … Panagiotakopoulos led the team with 15 double-digit dig matches including eight in a row from Sept. 11 to Oct. 6 … the Phoenix, Ariz., native also recorded 12 service aces and was one of nine people to recorded double-digit service aces this season.

Track & Field

The West Virginia University track and field team opens its 2012-13 season on Saturday, Dec. 1 with the Marty Pushkin Track Classic … the meet will take place in the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown, W.Va.

Saturday marks the beginning of the 36th season of track and field at WVU … the Mountaineers are under the direction of Sean Cleary who is in his sixth season at the helm of the program … since taking over the program in 2008, Cleary has coached 12 different Mountaineers to All-America status on 33 occasions including eight by former WVU standout Chelsea Carrier-Eades … WVU returns 32 letterwinners from the 2011-12 season including 2011 second-team All-American Sarah-Anne Brault in the 10,000 meter-run … the Mountaineers also return five athletes who competed at the 2012 NCAA East Outdoor Regional including Sydney Cummings, Jordan Hamric, Stormy Nesbit, Katlyn Shelar and Chene Townsend.

The Mountaineers look to put a stop to a two-game losing skid, as they head to Virginia on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. ... Sunday’s game is the first of three for the week, as WVU will go from Virginia to the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic in Charleston, W.Va., to face Marshall at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4 ... the Mountaineers will close out the week with a 7:30 p.m. game against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the WVU Coliseum.

The No. 12/14 WVU women’s basketball team dropped a pair of games at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Fla ... the Mountaineers fell to LSU, 71-63, on Friday and dropped a 79-70 decision to Iowa on Sunday.

Junior guard Taylor Palmer emerged as the scoring leader for the Mountaineers in each game at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic, as she averaged 19.0 points per game … Palmer was named to the FIU Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team for her efforts … Palmer is now WVU’s season-leading scorer as she averages 11.0 points per game, followed by senior Ayana Dunning with 10.0 points per game and junior guard Christal Caldwell with 8.6 points per game … the Mountaineers are still gaining much production from their bench players as WVU’s bench has accounted for 46.2 percent (159/344) of its scoring this season.

Select members of the No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will compete at the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships, Nov. 30-Dec. 2, at the United States Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Prior to the week-long Thanksgiving break, the Mountaineers (9-0, 4-0 GARC) defeated the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, 4719-4670 and 4716-4651, respectively at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range … WVU won in both guns both days shooting 2343-2320 smallbore and 2376-2350 air rifle on the first day and 2346-2312 smallbore and 2370-2330 air rifle the second … the Mountaineers now hold an 8-6 series record against the Nanooks.

The team’s scores were the fifth and sixth time the Mountaineers shot a total of 4700 or better this season … senior Petra Zublasing, junior Daniel Sojka, sophomores Taylor Ciotola, Meelis Kiisk and freshman Garrett Spurgeon counted toward the team score during the first match … Zublasing won both disciplines shooting 597 air rifle and 588 smallbore … Kiisk tied for the smallbore win; the score was a personal best for the Paide, Estonia, native … Kiisk also finished second in air rifle with a career-best mark of 594 … Ciotola tied Kiisk for second place in air rifle… in the second day of competition, Zublasing, Ciotola, Kiisk and Spurgeon counted towards the team’s score in both guns, while sophomore Thomas Kyanko counted towards the team’s smallbore score and Maren Prediger counted towards the air rifle score… Zublasing again won both disciplines, shooting 596 air rifle and 593 smallbore… Her smallbore score matched the school record set by Nicco Campriani … Prediger shot 594 air rifle for a second-place finish, while Ciotola and Kiisk finished in third and fourth with scores of 591 and 589, respectively … Ciotola finished second in smallbore with a 586 mark, while Kyanko finished in third with a score of 584 … The Mountaineers will return to action at the WVU Rifle Range on Jan. 19 against Nebraska.
