Burnett Named Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Rachael Burnett of the WVU women’s swimming team has been named the WVU Athlete of the Week for her performances in leading the team to a sixth-place finish at last weekend’s U.S. Winter Nationals in Austin, Texas.
Individually, Burnett finished fifth in the 1650 free (16:09.92), ninth in the 500 free (4:41.37) and 16th in the 200 free (1:47.36). She was also a member of the 200 free relay team that took 10th (1:34.13) and the 400 medley relay that finished ninth (3:42.37).
In the Big 12 rankings, Burnett ranks No. 1 in the 500 free (4:41.37), No. 1 in the 1650 free (16:09.92, No. 3 in the 1000 free (10:03.84), No. 4 in the 200 free (1:47.35), No. 9 in the 200 IM (2:05.18) and No. 9 in the 400 IM (4:27.45).
Nationally, Burnett is ranked No. 9 in the 1650 free and No. 12 in the 500 free.

The West Virginia women’s basketball team will face Marshall in the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic in Charleston, W.Va., at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4 ... the Mountaineers will close out the week with a 7:30 p.m. game against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the WVU Coliseum.

At the classic, junior Stormy Nesbit and senior Heather Adams posted record-setting performances … Nesbit posted the fourth-best triple jump performance in school history with a mark of 11.89 meters … Adams recorded the third-best weight throw in school history at 16.53 meters … Junior Chene Townsend also had a solid start to the season by taking first in two events for the Mountaineers in the 60-meter dash (7.75) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.86) … WVU took the top three spots in the 400-meter dash, with junior Shakiyla Cosby winning the race with a time of 59.80 and freshman Hannah Stone placing third with a time of 1:04.45 … freshman Brianna Kerekes ran unattached and came in second in the race with a time of 1:01.53 … in the field events, WVU won all the events it was entered in with Stone leading the way with a first place finish in the high jump (1.70m) … the Mountaineers took the top four spots in the pole vault with junior Katlyn Shelar competing unattached and winning the event with a mark of 3.75 meters … freshman Kiley Defibaugh placed second and senior Lindsay Kopenhaver and sophomore Caitlin Walton finished tied for third.

Five Mountaineers shot at the USA Winter Airgun Championships Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, at the United States Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Co. … senior Petra Zublasing was the talk of the championships, as she finished first overall in the women’s 10m air rifle competition with an aggregate score of 1195 … the Appiano, Italy, native shot relay scores of 399, 397 and 399 … she finished first overall on Friday (504.6) and Saturday (499.8) … despite her relay-best score of 399 on Sunday, she was forced to miss the final due to an early flight and therefore finished seventh overall … freshman Garrett Spurgeon had a strong showing in the men’s 10m air rifle competition, finishing sixth overall with a 1766 mark … Spurgeon’s best day was Sunday, as he placed fourth overall with a 694.2 (593, 101.2) mark … he also shot relay scores of 585 on Friday and 588 on Saturday … sophomore Meelis Kiisk was the visitor champion and finished 16th with a three-day total of 1748 … junior Daniel Sojka finished 17th with an aggregate total of 1745, while sophomore Thomas Kyanko shot a three-day total of 1734.
