MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Five West Virginia University rifle shooters saw action at the 2012 USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championships, on Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Senior Petra Zublasing
finished as the top shooter in the women’s 10m air rifle each day and as the overall top shooter and high visitor, with an aggregate score of 1195. On Friday, the Appiano, Italy, native shot 399 in the open relay and 105.6 in the finals. On Saturday, she shot 397 in the relay and 102.8 in the finals. Sunday, Zublasing placed seventh overall, but won the open relay with a score of 399; she missed the final due to travel arrangements.
Freshman Garrett Spurgeon
saw success each day as well. Spurgeon competed as a junior, and on his best day, Sunday, he placed fourth overall as well as in junior’s with a mark of 694.2 (593, 101.2). Additionally, he finished fifth in the junior’s (590, 102.0) and ninth overall on Saturday and sixth (585, 102.8) and 11th overall on Friday. The Canton, Mo., native, finished sixth overall with an aggregate score of 1766.
Sophomore Meelis Kiisk
finished 16th overall with the men’s high visitor mark of 1748. Kiisk received the high visitor score each day. On Friday, Kiisk shot 582 in the open relay and finished 14th overall. On Saturday, he placed placing 16th overall with a relay score of 586. Kiisk finished Sunday with a relay score of 580.
Junior Daniel Sojka
finished 17th overall with a score of 1745. Sojka shot his best score of 585 on Saturday. Additionally, he shot 581 on Friday and 580 on Sunday.
Sophomore Thomas Kyanko
shot scores of 581, 578 and 575, respectively, each day. His overall score was 1734.
The No. 2-ranked Mountaineers (9-0, 4-0 GARC) have concluded their fall slate. The team returns to the WVU Rifle Range on Jan. 19 to take on Nebraska.
