MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s tennis coach Tina Samara has announced the addition of Sydney Rider (Annapolis, Md./ Laurel Springs School) to the 2013-14 recruiting class.
“Sydney is another player that is similar to Hailey (Barrett) in some respects,” said coach Tina Samara. “She has a tremendous amount of upside. She has a really good kick serve and a really big forehand. She has a chance to immediately impact our doubles play. She has a lot of room to get better, and it should be a lot of fun because she has a lot of talent. We are very excited to have her be a part of our program.”
Rider comes to the Mountaineers as a TennisRecruiting.net four-star prospect that holds a national ranking of No. 194, Middle Atlantic region ranking of No. 27 and a state of Maryland ranking of No. 3.
During her prep career, Rider was ranked in the top 15 of each age group in the Mid-Atlantic, represented the USA in the 2010 Junior Federation Cup in India and was a full-time player at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Md.
“Sydney’s experience at the Junior Tennis Champions Center should make the transition to college game a little bit easier,” Samara says. “She has familiarity of what is necessary at the collegiate level and will probably come in a little more prepared for the collegiate level. Also very helpful to her is her experience at the Junior Federation Cup. Team competition prior to college is very helpful because tennis is such an individual sport. It gives kids the idea of what it is like to play on a team.”
