MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Ayana Dunning and Christal Caldwell each recorded a game-leading 17 points in the No. 23 West Virginia women’s basketball team’s 67-47 defeat over St. Bonaventure Saturday at the WVU Coliseum.

“First half, I thought we played good defense,” coach Mike Carey said. “Second half, we let them drive us, but we got up 30 and I was happy for our effort.”

The Mountaineers (6-2) took an early lead on the Bonnies (5-6) with a season-best 50.9 field goal percentage (29-57), while limiting turnovers to a season-low eight. WVU was successful in pulling away by as many as 30 points in the second half and never let up.

WVU held St. Bonaventure to 38 percent (19-50) shooting from the field, while forcing 13 turnovers. The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Bonnies, 35-27, gaining 10 points off second-chance opportunities.

Behind Caldwell and Dunning, true freshman Bria Holmes came off the bench for nine points and Taylor Palmer added seven points, all in the second half. Caldwell and Holmes led the team on the boards with eight and five rebounds, respectively. WVU recorded a season-high 16 assists behind Brooke Hampton’s four and Caldwell’s three.

“Once again, I thought the first half that Bria Holmes came in and gave us a big boost,” Carey said. “Taylor shoots well when she has her feet under her and when she is on the move and falling left and right, she doesn’t shoot well. We just need to get two halves because right now we are getting one. If we can get two—that would be good.”

Alaina Walker led St. Bonaventure with 17 points and Doris Ortega followed with 12 points. The Bonnies’ Katie Healy led the team in rebounding with eight boards.

“We have tough games coming up,” Carey said. “If you look at our opponents coming up, Youngstown State is 6-1 and beat Pitt at Pitt. So we have tough non-conference games coming up.”

The Mountaineers will play host to Youngstown State on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum.
