MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opens it 2013 spring season on Saturday afternoon, as it takes on No. 57 Ohio State at noon at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“We are very excited to get our spring season underway,” says coach Tina Samara. “This season will obviously be a step up, as we make the move to the Big 12 Conference, but our fall season allowed us to get a sampling of what the competition level is going to be like. We had some success in those matches, but there were also moments when we exhibited our youth.”
This will be the second consecutive season that the Mountaineers open their spring season with a match against the Buckeyes. In last season’s match, WVU was swept by Ohio State, 7-0.
“We are going to have to limit our mistakes, just as we would want to do it each match this season,” Samara says. “Fortunately, we won’t be giving up a doubles match and a singles point prior to the start of the match this season, so we won’t be at an immediate disadvantage like we were last season.”
The Mountaineers will head into the 2013 season with two returners from last season’s lineup, senior Emily Mathis
and sophomore Ikttesh Chahal
Also in the fold for WVU is senior Audrey Wooland
, who transferred from Louisiana-Lafayette during the summer, and three freshmen, Irinka Toidze
, Hailey Barrett
and Vivian Tsui
“We really like the group of girls that we have together right now,” Samara says. “They are a group that has worked hard to get better, and they have shown us the ability to compete. When you combine that with the hope that we can limit our mistakes, you will have the chance to be successful. We are excited to get this group on the court in a team setting, after playing in tournaments throughout the fall season.”
A full recap of Saturday’s match will be available on WVUsports.com after the completion of competition.
