MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After posting two top-5 program marks last weekend, the West Virginia University track and field team will head to Akron, Ohio for the two-day Akron Invitational on Feb. 1-2 at Stile Athletics Field House.

“Hopefully we have recovered from this vicious flu that has blasted the East,” coach Sean Cleary says. “We are looking to get our feet back on the ground before putting the final touches on the remainder of the indoor season. Any time we run on a 300-meter track, we should be looking to familiarize ourselves for what is coming at the Big 12 Championships.”

Competition is slated to begin at 4 p.m., on Friday and 9:30 a.m., on Saturday.

“For those competing as with any meet, we are looking for our best efforts,” Cleary says. “Each weekend, we look to improve on our weaknesses. Practice is the arena by which we work in order to find out how good we are come race day. ”

Last weekend at the PSU National Invitational, senior Heather Adams recorded a mark of 18.04 meters in the weight throw, breaking her own school record on Friday evening. Adams finished fifth in the competition and now owns four of the top five records in WVU program history in the weight throw. Junior Chene Townsend also saw action Friday night and posted a season-best time of 8.53 in the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles for a seventh-place finish. In the finals, Townsend went on to finish in eighth place with a time of 8.69.

In the invitational heat of the distance medley relay, freshmen Kelly Williams, Christa D’Egidio, Peyton Hampson and junior Sarah Martinelli finished just behind former Big East foe Georgetown for a second-place finish with a time of 11:34.55. On Saturday, Williams was the only Mountaineer to snag a first-place finish by taking top honors in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:11.88. Senior Sydney Cummings also had a strong performance by matching her career-best in the high jump with a leap of 1.76 meters that was good enough for a third-place finish.

Live results from the race can be found at finishtimingresults.com, while a live video stream can be viewed at mac-sports.com. Final results and a recap will be posted on WVUsports.com following the completion of the competition.
