Women’s Tennis Drops Match at Syracuse
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team was defeated by Syracuse, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Center in Syracuse, N.Y.
“We did a total 180 from our match last weekend,” said coach Tina Samara. “The effort was just not there on our behalf. We didn’t have the proper body language, and we didn’t have the fight that was necessary in order to win.”
The Orange (2-5), who came into the match having faced ranked opponents in four of its first six matches, got off to an early start against the Mountaineers, as they were able to take the double points by winning each of the three matches.
In singles play, Syracuse looked to build its lead in the match.
In the No. 1 singles match, the Orange’s Maddie Kobelt defeated WVU”s Audrey Wooland, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, Hailey Barrett, who had a 2-0 mark in singles play heading into the match, was defeated by Amanda Rodgers, 7-5, 6-2.
“Hailey fought and had some chances in the first set,” Samara said. “However, we were very disappointed in how we lost. This was a step backwards from last weekend’s win.”
With a 3-0 lead built, Syracuse looked to close out the match, and did so, with wins at No. 3 singles, No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles.
The Mountaineers’ lone singles win of the day came at No. 4 singles, as senior Emily Mathis defeated Brenna Bachini, 6-2, 4-6, (10-3).
“Emily once again did what she always does,” Samara said. “She wills her way to a win. Some of her teammates need to take note of what she does on the court. Hopefully, this will wake some of our girls up, because it is unacceptable to not compete.”
WVU (1-2) returns to the court Sunday morning, as it heads to Buffalo, N.Y., to take on Buffalo at 11:30 a.m.
