MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior high jumper Sydney Cummings tied the school-record with a leap of 1.78 meters and placed second in the gold division Saturday at the Akron Invitational.

Cummings topped her personal best of 1.76 meters that she recorded the last two weekends and now claims the top two spots in the top-5 for high jump in program history.

“Looking at the positive moments from this meet, none stand out more than Sydney Cummings in the high jump,” coach Sean Cleary says. “This jump has been in the works for so long and we are very pleased to see it come to fruition. Sydney will enjoy this for a few days and set the bar higher now that she is realizing her true potential.”

Also seeing action on Saturday, junior Chené Townsend recorded a personal-best time of 7.72 for an 11th-place finish in the preliminary heat of the 60-meter dash.

“Chené added another personal best to her resume,” Cleary says. “She continues to get better and better each week. I truly believe that she has more in her and over the next few weeks, we will see some very good results from her.”

After breaking the school record last weekend at the PSU National Invitational, senior Heather Adams recorded the second-best weight throw of her career with a mark of 17.83 meters for an eighth-place finish in the gold division. Sophomore Karissa Knabenshue also recorded a personal-best weight throw mark of 15.18 meters on Saturday in the blue division and finished 10th.

“Heather and Karissa continue to make their marks in the weight throw,” Cleary says. “It is very clear that they are moving to a new level and should be very ready to show their true potential as the weeks progress.

“We made some good progress today. We must continue the focus and drive that has allowed for these marks to unfold. We are pleased but know that we can get better."

The Mountaineers will stay on the road as they travel to SPIRE in Geneva, Ohio for a meet on Feb. 8-9.
