MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team hosts Murray State Saturday, Feb. 9, at the WVU Rifle Range.

Tomorrow’s match, added to the schedule on Feb. 4, serves as the regular-season finale for WVU as well as senior Petra Zublasing’s final home competition.

The Mountaineers (10-1, 5-1 GARC) hold a 20-3 all-time series advantage over the Racers (1-7).

In the last meeting, WVU hosted Murray State in 2012 and outshot the Racers in both guns, winning air rifle, 2356-2322, and smallbore, 2332-2293.

“We would more than likely have just had a regular practice on Saturday, so to have another team be willing to travel and compete against us here works out really well,” says coach Jon Hammond. “It is good to have that match experience because there is nothing really that can substitute for that.”

The Mountaineers are returning to the range after their first loss of the season, as they fell at No. 3 Kentucky, 4704-4695, on Feb. 2, at Baker Hall, in Lexington, Ky.

UK outshot WVU in the smallbore relay, winning 2343-2325. Despite the loss, Zublasing took first in the discipline, shooting a 592 (199 prone, 196 standing, 197 kneeling) mark. The score was one shot short of tying her career-best mark.

The Mountaineers bounced back in the air rifle competition and defeated the Wildcats, 2370-2361. Zublasing placed first again, shooting 596 (98-99-100-99-100-100). Sophomore Maren Prediger shot 595 for second place and tied her season-best mark.
Murray State is coming off of a second-place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, shooting 2263 smallbore and 2324 air rifle, on Feb. 3, in Morehead, Ky.

“Murray State is a good team,” concludes Hammond. “They are a young team, but they have some good shooters. They are close to qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, which means they are a team we might see later on. It will be good to have another match against a quality team to help us prepare for the end of the season.”

Saturday’s match begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to go into the afternoon. Live scores will be available
