MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Heather Adams broke the school-record in the weight throw for the second time this season after recording a mark of 18.18 meters Saturday at the SPIRE Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Adams topped her personal-best throw of 18.04 meters that she recorded two weeks ago and now owns the top three spots in the top-5 for weight throw in program history.

“Heather put together the best series of throws of her career,” coach Sean Cleary says. “When an athlete does that it usually means a big breakthrough is about to happen. She is peaking well.”

In her first time ever competing in the mile, freshman Kelly Williams also recorded a personal-best time by taking second in the mile with a time of 4:38.47. Williams’ time also ranks her third on the WVU top-5 in program history.

“Kelly continues to impress,” Cleary says. “To break into our top 5 list in the mile is no easy feat. Our top 5 is the only group to have achieved All-American status from one through five. For Kelly to do this in the first mile of her career makes it more impressive.”

For the second week in a row, junior Chené Townsend posted a personal-best time of 7.66 in the 60-meter dash preliminary heat for a 14th-place finish.

“Chené knocks another few hundredths off her lifetime best in the 60-meter dash,” Cleary says. “She is rounding into shape at the right time.”

Competing for the first time this season, senior Sarah-Anne Brault took 12th place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:34.62, while junior Sarah Martinelli followed closely behind in 16th place with a time of 9:40.32.

“The 3,000 meter was a bright spot for us today,” Cleary says. “It was nice to see All-American Brault out there for the first time in two years after chasing her Olympic dreams last winter. This marked an improvement of six seconds from her best ever in the 3,000 meters. Martinelli also had a very big run while taking 13 seconds off of her best. I know both have more improvement in them."

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Feb. 15 as half the team will travel to Akron, Ohio for the Zips Invitational, while the other half will stay home for the Gold-Blue Open at the WVU Shell Building.
