MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After setting two school records in her team’s victory over the weekend, West Virginia University rifle shooter Petra Zublasing has been named this week’s Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.

The Appiano, Italy, native was fantastic in the No. 1 Mountaineers’ 4700-4628 victory over No. 11 Murray State on Feb. 9, her final match at the WVU Rifle Range. Zublasing shot a winning score of 594 (199 prone, 197 standing, 198 kneeling) in smallbore. The mark is one shot better than the previous Mountaineer record of 593, a mark she hit twice before and a record first shot by Olympic Gold medalist Nicco Campriani in 2010. Zublasing’s aggregate score of 1193 also is a school record, besting Campriani’s mark of 1192 set in 2011.

In addition to her two records, Zublasing also shot a winning 599 (100-100-100-100-100-99) in air rifle, one shot short of the school record.

Zublasing’s success comes as she prepares to defend her 2012 NCAA air rifle title at this year’s national championships, set for March 8-9, in Columbus, Ohio.
