MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Thirty-five women’s basketball players were honored by the Big 12 Conference today highlighted by West Virginia with the most players named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 team.
Six Mountaineers earned the honor, sophomore Averee Fields
was in the spotlight as one of only five total players in the league to maintain a 4.0 grade point average.
Fields was named to the first team alongside teammates Akilah Bethel
and Jess Harlee
. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Fields majors in social work, Bethel is a journalism major and Harlee is an industrial engineering major.
WVU players made up one-third of the second team, as nine total players were listed with GPAs of 3.00 to 3.19. Brooke Hampton
, Crystal Leary
and Taylor Palmer
were each named to the second team. Hampton is majoring in marketing, Leary is a childhood development and family studies major and Palmer is majoring in accounting.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
