MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball player’s Brittany Sample and Anna Panagiotakopoulos will travel to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts set for Feb. 22-24.

WVU assistant coach Sara Kidd will join the duo as a court coach on the U.S. Women’s National volleyball team tryout staff.

"I think this a great opportunity for Sara, Anna, and Britt to become more acquainted with USA Volleyball,” coach Jill Kramer says. “Anna actually played on many USA teams throughout her prep career and we feel like it is important for her to stay in that competitive arena. Britt is a true competitor and I'm excited to see her rise to the occasion at the tryout."

Sample is one of two freshmen to start and play in every set of every match this past fall and led the team with 960 assists and 8.89 assists per set. The Lewisville, Texas native recorded three straight games with 50 plus assists and finished the season with 12 double-doubles – including seven over a nine game period. Sample finished second on the team in digs with 273 and led the team in digs on six different occasions.

Panagiotakopoulos played in 19 matches as the team’s libero and posted a team-leading 297 digs and 3.38 digs per set. The Phoenix, Ariz., native led the team in digs on 15 different occasions and finished out the season with double-digit digs in three of the last four matches. Panagiotakopoulos was named to the Golden Horseshoe Challenge and Gold & Blue Classic All-Tournament teams and was one of nine Mountaineers to serve up double-digit services aces with 12 on the season.

During tryouts, athletes will compete for spots on the USA Women’s Volleyball National Team program. Athletes not selected to participate with the national team may be considered for other programs run by USA Volleyball, including the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team, or the USA Women’s Senior A2 Team.

A record 247 athletes signed up to participate, including 60 outside hitters, 57 middle blockers, 56 liberos, 49 setters and 25 opposites. A total of 90 different colleges are represented on the roster.
