Kyanko Qualifies for NCAA Championships
Ohio State plays host to the championships March 8-9 at Converse Hall and French Field House, in Columbus, Ohio. The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers qualified as the championships’ top seed on Feb. 20. “This is a great achievement for Thomas,” says Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “He’s been shooting strong smallbore throughout the year, and he had a solid day at our NCAA Qualifying Match. I’m glad he’ll be shooting alongside his teammates; his qualification really proves how much depth we had on the team this year.” Kyanko is one of eight student-athletes selected to shoot at the championships, and he earned one of the four smallbore spots based on his 580 score at the team’s NCAA Qualifying Match at Ohio State on Feb. 17. Prior to last week’s Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships, Kyanko owned a 580.33 smallbore season average. He shot a career- and season-best 591 in the team’s season-opening win at Army on Oct. 7. Kyanko is coming off a strong showing at the GARC Championships, as the Wellsburg, W.Va., native finished fourth in smallbore with a 684.4 total. He entered the final in second place with a 587 mark, his second-best score of the season, and shot 97.4 in the final. Teammate Petra Zublasing won the discipline title with a 696.4 score. Prior to the championships, he was named to the All-GARC Smallbore Second Team; he also was named the team’s Scholar Athlete honoree. |
