MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - It is fair to say the first-ever “Wendy M. Roach Invitational” Pink Meet was a huge success for the West Virginia University gymnastics team.

Held February 24 at the WVU Coliseum, the No. 16-ranked Mountaineers (8-6, 1-1 Big 12) scored a season-best 196.55 en route to a second-place finish against No. 3 Michigan (196.925), New Hampshire (194.875) and Towson (193.15).

More importantly, the Mountaineers raised awareness about breast cancer, as the meet honored Wendy, the mother of former WVU gymnast and current student assistant Nicole Roach. The Mountaineers donned new pink leotards, and fans were asked to wear pink. Additionally, fans, visiting teams and various WVU athletic squads brought sundry items, such as nail polish, books, lotions and socks, in baskets to donate to patients at Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.

A few of the Mountaineers, along with coach Jason Butts and assistant coach Bridget Boyd, visited the Center this morning and delivered the donations.

“We were honored to stop by the Center this morning and meet with the staff that works so hard to bring a smile to patients’ faces on a daily basis,” Butts said. “Hopefully, the donations we delivered today will bring a few smiles, too.

“Again, I want to thank all of our fans that brought donations last Sunday. I also want to thank Michigan, New Hampshire, Towson and the WVU teams that graciously donated beautiful boxes full of gifts. Sunday’s meet was a great success, and we hope to continue to raise awareness and support the Center in the future.”

The Mountaineers stay at the Coliseum this weekend and play host to No. 13 Denver, George Washington and Temple this Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m.
