MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team competes in two matches this weekend, as it travels to Charleston, W.Va., for a neutral-site match against No. 68 Virginia Tech on Saturday, March 2, at 11 a.m., at the Charleston Tennis Club then returns home for a match versus Marquette on Sunday, March 3, at 10 a.m., at Ridgeview Racquet Club.

The Hokies, who jumped into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s rankings this week, enter Saturday with a 6-2 mark, while the Golden Eagles, who compete at Rutgers on Friday, enter the weekend with a 9-4 record.

“We are excited about the opportunity to compete at the Charleston Tennis Club,” said coach Tina Samara. “We hope to see our fans from the southern part of West Virginia out at the match. This will give them opportunity to see us play, which is something they do not normally have.”

The Mountaineers (1-6) matchup against Virginia Tech is the 22nd meeting in program history, with WVU’s last win against the Hokies coming during the 1992 season.

As for the match against Marquette, it is the fifth time the two teams have squared off, with the Mountaineers looking for their first win in the series on Sunday.

“Saturday’s match against Virginia Tech is our fourth straight match against a ranked opponent,” Samara said. “We have progressively gotten better over our last three matches, and we have shown an ability to compete a little more against these ranked teams. We are starting to get on the same page. If each of our girls plays smart, sound tennis, we will give ourselves a chance in each of these matches.”

Senior Emily Mathis continues to lead WVU in singles wins (4), doubles wins (5) and combined victories (9). Fellow senior Audrey Wooland has teamed with Mathis in each of her five doubles victories.

In last week’s match against Penn State, Ikttesh Chahal and Vivian Tsui captured singles wins for the Mountaineers, while Wooland and Mathis earned a doubles win.

A full recap of Saturday and Sunday’s matches will be available on WVUsports.com after the completion of competition.
